When hope, courage, and the spirit of a nation come together, magic happens—like this moment, when 10-year-old Isabella, battling cancer, will get the opportunity to step onto the field with the Springboks to live her dream.

Nelspruit, Mbombela (28 September 2024) – It’s stories like these that remind us of the power of hope, dreams, and the magic of sports. The Springboks, our nation’s rugby giants, have once again teamed up with Reach For a Dream to create a moment so powerful, it’s left South Africans beaming with pride and joy.

Reach For a Dream is an organisation that has been changing lives for over 30 years by granting the wishes of children with life-threatening illnesses. They step in during some of the hardest moments in a child’s life, offering not just an escape, but hope, joy, and unforgettable experiences.

This week, they’ve made a special dream come true for a brave young South African.

Isabella, a 10-year-old from East London who is living with cancer, had one wish: to meet the Springboks, her heroes. And what better way to make that happen than with the nation’s beloved Bokke?

In a heartwarming social media post, the Springboks shared the news of Isabella’s dream coming true.

“Today is a very special day for 10-year-old Isabella from East London. Her dream of meeting the Springboks is about to come true. Living with cancer, rugby has always been her source of strength. Today, through a collaboration between the Springboks and Reach For a Dream, she’ll step onto the field in Nelspruit, holding Siya Kolisi’s hand to sing the national anthem before the game against Argentina.”

This moment wasn’t just about meeting her heroes; it represented something much bigger. The Springboks’ post continued to share that Isabella’s incredible courage is a shining reminder to all of us. Even during life’s toughest battles, hope is what keeps dreams alive. To make the day even more special, Isabella’s entire family has been invited to witness her once-in-a-lifetime moment from the stands. We can already feel the goosebumps rising in anticipation of that moment when she walks hand-in-hand with Siya Kolisi, standing proudly in front of a packed stadium.

Watch the clip below:

This isn’t just a story about rugby. It’s about how sport can bring us together, how it can lift up the spirits of those in need, and how the heart of a child can inspire a nation. Today, the Springboks have once again shown why they hold such a special place in our hearts. It’s moments like these that truly reflect the spirit of South Africa.

So, as we cheer for the Bokke this afternoon, we’ll be cheering even louder for Isabella, whose strength and determination remind us all of the power of hope and dreams.

South Africa, today is a day to celebrate the good!

A brave petrol attendant is being hailed as a hero after fearlessly intervening to stop an attempted abduction at a BP station in Johannesburg, risking his life to save a stranger from armed attackers.

Johannesburg, South Africa (28 September 2024) – Headlines frequently highlight the worst of humanity, but moments like this remind us of the incredible power of everyday heroes. A petrol attendant, whose name remains unknown, has become a national hero after courageously stepping in to prevent what appeared to be an attempted abduction at the BP station on Corlett Drive near Melrose Arch.

The incident, captured on CCTV and shared by Yusuf Abramjee, host of Crimewatch on e.tv, shows a man being escorted away from his car by a group of armed men. What happens next has gripped the nation. The petrol attendant, realising something was amiss, leapt into action, putting his own life at risk to protect a stranger.

His swift and brave intervention likely saved the man from an unimaginable ordeal.

The footage, uploaded to X (formerly known as Twitter), has since gone viral, sparking widespread debate. While a few on social media have criticised the petrol attendant’s actions as reckless, the overwhelming response has been one of praise. Most are hailing him as a hero, celebrating his courage in the face of danger.

You can watch the video below (or click here to watch).

This heroic act comes at a time when abductions and kidnappings seem to be rising in South Africa. It’s become a grim part of daily news, with the latest statistics showing that approximately 16,000 kidnapping cases are reported in the country annually. The recent abduction of Alize van der Merwe and another victim, who were thankfully dropped off at a police station in the Eastern Cape after the South African Police Services and other teams worked tirelessly to rescue her, has only amplified concerns.

These kidnappings and abductions often follow a disturbing pattern. Many victims are taken to gain access to their bank accounts through mobile apps or, in some cases, held for ransom. It’s a terrifying reality that makes stories like this even more powerful, reminding us that good people are still willing to stand up against the darkness.

How to Stay Safe in Public Spaces

In light of the rise in abductions, it’s crucial to remain vigilant. Here are five ways to help ensure your safety in public places:

Stay Aware of Your Surroundings: Always be mindful of what’s happening around you, especially in public spaces like parking lots or petrol stations.

Trust Your Instincts: If something feels off, don’t ignore it. Move to a safer area or alert someone nearby.

Avoid Using Phones When Walking or Driving: It’s easy to get distracted, but staying off your phone allows you to remain alert to potential threats.

Park in Well-Lit Areas Near Lots of Other People: When parking your car, choose spots that are well-lit and busy. This reduces the chances of being targeted.

Have Your Keys Ready: When heading back to your car, have your keys in hand. It minimises time spent vulnerable and can be used as a weapon if needed.

In a time of growing uncertainty and fear, the brave actions of this petrol attendant is a powerful reminder that there are still good people out there willing to stand up for others. His courageous intervention in a dangerous situation not only prevented a potential tragedy but has also inspired hope and gratitude across the country.

As one social media user commented, “The fuel attendant had absolutely no doubt about running into the line of fire. He had very little regard for what could happen to him. He is my hero of 2024.”

Good Things Guy has contacted BP for more information about the incident. As the story progresses, we will continue to share the latest developments.

Just like the Bokke keep showing us, South Africans are unstoppable when they stand together—proving once again that, even in the face of controversy, we unite to celebrate our heritage, our traditions, and the spirit of a shared braai.

Western Cape, South Africa (25 September 2024) – Just like the Bokke keep showing us, South Africans are truly stronger when we stand together. And it was this unity that shone brightly over Heritage Day when South Africans from all walks of life rallied behind Jan Braai, a man who has become almost synonymous with this beloved South African tradition.

Heritage Day, also known as “Braai Day” to many, is a day when South Africans come together to celebrate their diverse cultures, often around the warmth of a braai fire. Braaiing has grown beyond just a way of cooking—it’s become a symbol of unity, togetherness, and proudly celebrating who we are. One man who has played a massive role in this is Jan Braai (real name Jan Scannell), the founder of National Braai Day, who encourages South Africans to connect through the simple act of sharing food over a fire.

This year, Jan partnered with the Western Cape Food Lover’s Market for a special Heritage Day promotion, where he handed out his latest creation, the ‘kerriewors’—a delicious Kerrie-flavoured boerewors roll—at their Willowbridge store.

But what should have been a joyful day of celebrating Heritage Day took an unexpected turn when a now-viral video clip surfaced online. In the video, captured by a bystander, Jan is seen handing out kerriewors to excited shoppers in the parking lot, but the caption suggested something far more negative. It read, “See how Jan Braai ignores the guy in the blue tracksuit,” leading many to accuse Jan of racism. Mainstream media quickly picked up the story, fanning the flames of the controversy.

The original video, showing just a snippet of the event, painted Jan in a negative light. But, in an era where online narratives can quickly get skewed, there was much more to the story.

Food Lover’s Market stepped in with the facts, posting CCTV footage of the full event, which clearly showed that the man in the blue tracksuit did, in fact, receive a kerriewors roll. The retailer was quick to rubbish the racism allegations, calling them out as a gross misrepresentation of the day.

“We enjoyed a lovely day out at our Willowbridge store, giving customers a taste of the Jan Braai Kerriewors. Shoppers, from all walks of life, had great fun sampling delicious free boeries. We are aware of allegations making the rounds that only selected shoppers received boerewors rolls. This is simply not true,” the Food Lover’s Market team said in a statement.

They further added: “This allegation is based on an uncharitable interpretation of a single video, which was a small snapshot of the day. Anyone who was there would find the allegation laughable.”

Some mainstream media platforms pulled the original articles and issued corrections and apologies.

What could have easily spiralled into a harmful “cancel” moment was quickly turned around as the truth emerged, and South Africans rallied behind Jan. Social media was soon flooded with love and support for the braai master, with many users defending him and pointing out how easily a misleading video can change the story.

“We need to focus on our country’s positivity. We can’t let things divide us, especially things that are not true. We are stronger together! I think we need to spend less time fighting with each other online and more time together, united around a lekker braai,” Jan told Good Things Guy.

The irony in it all? On a day meant to celebrate our heritage, including the tradition of gathering for a braai, South Africans came together on social media to stand behind a man whose very name is Jan Braai! This wasn’t just about defending a person, but about uniting for something bigger: a shared culture, a love for braaiing, and a sense of fairness that brought everyone together.

And that’s the real beauty of Heritage Day—no matter where we come from or what we believe in, we are united in our love for a good old-fashioned braai and in standing up for what’s right.

South Africans, we truly are stronger together!

Moved to provide relief in a moment of chaos and desperation, trucker Miriam Mzangaza selflessly shared her meagre supplies of coffee and cornflakes with stranded families on the N3 in KZN.

spar hero of the week

KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (23 September 2024) – Best known for its heat, humidity and lekker vibes, KwaZulu-Natal was thrown into a state of disbelief over the weekend as a rare and unexpected snowfall blanketed its northern regions, causing the closure of the N3 highway in both directions between Harrismith in the Free State and the Tugela Plaza in KZN.

With many plans and events cancelled, hopes for a fun weekend were instantly dampened for many, but the most heartbreaking of all? The plight of countless families and motorists who found themselves stranded in their vehicles after being caught in the unexpected blizzard.

Spreading much-needed warmth and a glimmer of hope to many disheartened, cold and hungry KZN motorists stuck in thick snow along the N3 was a compassionate Mariam.

According to reports and trending posts by Trucker SA, Miriam Mzangaza, known to many as Masigwede, is a proud mother, trucker, and now an instant hero.

Stuck on the N3 near Van Reenen Pass, Miriam’s motherly instincts kicked in and she was moved to help those around her. Rather than focusing on her own troubles, Miriam extended a helping hand to other stranded motorists, offering them a warm cup of coffee and some cornflakes.

“She reached out to SA Trucker, asking anyone nearby to come and share in what little she had. The response was overwhelming, and those who were touched by her kindness will never forget her.

“In that moment, Miriam showed the true spirit of motherhood – doing whatever it takes to ensure her family and others are safe and cared for, even in difficult times,” SA Trucker shared.

Mariam’s sheer selflessness in a moment of desperation and uncertainty for many, not only gained her deserving praise but also displayed the true essence of ubuntu and what it means to be a blessing unto others in need.

“Your selflessness, Miriam, has made you a hero in the eyes of many. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts and pray that all you gave will be returned to you a million-fold,” SA Trucker praised.

When disaster strikes, South Africans don’t hesitate – we rally, we show up, and we help each other through even the most bizarre of circumstances. This weekend, a rare snowstorm trapped thousands, including my parents, but the outpouring of unity and kindness proved once again that in times of need, our nation’s heart beats as one.

KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (22 September 2024) – When South Africans are called upon, they show up – every time. It’s something deeply woven into the fabric of our nation. Whether it’s floods, fires, or something as unexpected as a snowstorm, we stand together to help one another, no questions asked.

This weekend, South Africa was once again reminded of that beautiful unity.

A bizarre snowstorm hit the country, blanketing roads and communities in heavy snow over the weekend. The snowfall was so intense that it caused major disruptions, leaving thousands of people stranded on roads, especially along the N3 highway, which links Johannesburg to Durban. Even with detours, it was nearly impossible to move.

Warnings were given days before about possible snow and cold weather, but no one expected it to be as severe as it was – especially in spring! The snowstorm that rolled through this weekend is said by some to be the worst since 1912.

I was in London for work when I woke up to the alarming news – my parents were amongst the thousands trapped near Van Reenen’s Pass. They had already been stuck for 12 hours, completely snowed in, with the snow almost a meter deep. Their car couldn’t move, a blizzard raged outside, and my dad, of all things, was in flip-flops, with no warm clothes, no socks, and no fresh water or food. They were freezing, and the situation was becoming more dire by the hour.

The day was one of the most stressful I’ve ever experienced, for my entire family, and for anyone else in that situation. It was traumatic, and I can only imagine how it felt for the people who had no way out.

But as Mister Rogers said, “In times of tragedy, look for the helpers. They will always be there.”

This weekend was no different.

The country rallied. Emergency teams, NGOs, farmers, and regular citizens worked tirelessly to assist the thousands who were stranded. Social media was flooded with stories of truckers sharing food with others stuck on the road, farmers making their way through the snow to offer food and warm clothes, and NGOs like “Gift of the Givers” and the “Muslim Welfare Society” following the graders as they cleared the roads, handing out food to anyone they could find. Even communities like “Love Howick” banded together to distribute blankets, warm meals, tea/coffees, toilet paper, and so much more, which were distributed by motorbikes along the N3 to stranded trucks and vehicles. It was nothing short of amazing.

Kindness spread like wildfire. There were messages of love and support pouring in for everyone stuck in the snow. I sent my parents as many of these messages as I could to keep their spirits up. And honestly, it worked.

Even as the situation remained bleak – 25 hours later, they were still stuck. The snow was still too deep to move their car, and the night was falling again. It was dark, cold, and absolutely terrifying for those still stuck on the road.

But after 29 long hours, rescue teams finally reached them. My parents, along with many others, were finally able to move. Slowly but surely, they were heading home. There are no words to describe the relief. They were safe. The drive was slow, but they knew they were finally going to make it.

Sadly, not everyone was as lucky. It was reported that one person tragically lost their life in the storm. To their family, I send my deepest condolences. There are no words that can make this easier but know the country is with you in your grief.

After 36 hours, my parents finally made it home. They were tired, traumatised, but safe. And all they can talk about is how incredible South Africans were during this ordeal. They weren’t left alone – there was someone who brought them a warm curry, another person gave them water. And they found solace in the messages of love from social media. I was sending them every bit of kindness I could find, and it absolutely lifted their spirits.

To everyone who showed up this weekend, thank you. You reminded us once again that when we are called upon, we unite in a way that is truly special. Our heart beats as one, and in times of tragedy, we don’t need to look for the helpers – because we are the helpers.

That’s the South Africa I’m so proud to call home.

This week, that spirit has united a nation in an extraordinary show of compassion, as donations have poured in to help beloved talk show host Tom London in his fight for life, far surpassing the initial crowdfunding goal and proving once again that South Africans stand strongest when they stand together.

Johannesburg, South Africa (14 September 2024) – When called upon, South Africans never fail to answer with heart and determination. They rally together, proving time and again that when a community member is in need, they will step up, no questions asked.

And this week, this incredible spirit has been directed towards saving Tom London, a beloved talk show host and activist who has touched the lives of countless people across the nation.

Tom, a familiar and respected voice in South African media, recently found himself facing a life-threatening health crisis. What began as a simple chest cold spiralled into a severe case of pneumonia and a massive pleural effusion. His condition became so critical that he was admitted to Helen Joseph Hospital, where he encountered not only his illness but the harsh realities of the South African public healthcare system. From his hospital bed, Tom began to document his ordeal, sharing raw, emotional videos on Facebook Live that quickly went viral. In these videos, he spoke openly about the challenges he faced: the lack of care, the distressing conditions, and the negligence he witnessed firsthand, including the heartbreaking experience of a fellow patient passing away without immediate assistance.

“Doctors here, you are giving Doctors in South Africa a bad name. I am so angry with you. This is the Helen Joseph Circus Hospital, where Doctors experiment on you,” Tom said in one of his videos.

His words struck a chord with many South Africans who have experienced similar struggles or know someone who has.

In response, social media has become a platform for countless South Africans to share their own harrowing stories about the conditions in government hospitals. From videos of long waits and inadequate care to stories of loved ones lost due to neglect, these voices are coming together to highlight the urgent need for reform. Tom’s story has inspired a movement, with people nationwide now speaking out, demanding accountability, and calling for a better healthcare system for all.

But amid the frustration and fear, a different narrative began to unfold asd well – one of hope, unity, and compassion.

Tom’s story resonated deeply with people across the country, igniting a wave of support that brought both hope and healing. Within days, kind-hearted South Africans had raised over R120,000 to help cover his medical expenses. This generosity allowed Tom to move to a private hospital, where he could receive the care he urgently needed. For the first time in nearly two weeks, he finally had a restful night’s sleep.

However, Tom’s battle was far from over. Earlier the next day, he received the news that he needed an urgent operation to drain fluid from his lungs, a life-saving procedure. The cost of the surgery at the private hospital was estimated to be around R300,000. Faced with this overwhelming financial burden, Tom considered transferring to another public facility but ultimately decided to try and raise the funds himself to remain in the private hospital where he could receive immediate care.

But Tom did not have to face this challenge alone. Moved by his story, Alistair Jameson, a compassionate South African who had been following Tom’s journey, took action. He launched a crowdfunding campaign on BackaBuddy to raise the funds necessary for Tom’s surgery.

The goal was set at R300,000, a daunting amount, but one that the community embraced wholeheartedly.

The response was nothing short of extraordinary. Donations poured in from across the country and the world, surpassing the R300,000 target within days. Today, the campaign has exceeded expectations, ensuring that Tom can continue his treatment without the looming fear of financial ruin.

In a heartfelt message, Tom has expressed his gratitude for the outpouring of support: “I am so grateful,” he shared. “The help of kind strangers is one of the greatest things to happen to me in my life and has given me a new perspective.”

Tom’s story has done more than just save a life; it has sparked a much-needed conversation about the challenges within our government hospitals. Since his story went viral, countless South Africans have shared their own experiences, raising their voices on social media and calling for change. But beyond exposing the flaws in the system, Tom’s journey also shines a light on our incredible capacity to come together in times of need.

It shows that, as a nation, we are stronger when we stand united, proving that compassion and solidarity can make a real difference.

South Africans are being called to send love and uplifting messages to 12-year-old Harry, the sole survivor of a tragic car accident, to help him heal through the power of community support.

South Africa (08 September 2024) – When heartache hits, South Africans are never far from one another. In times of crisis, our spirit of unity and compassion rises above, transforming sorrow into a powerful support force. Today, our nation is being called upon to channel that spirit of kindness and love for a young soul-survivor named Harry, who needs our encouragement more than ever.

Recently, a tragic social media post by Sarah Corlett has begun circulating, capturing hearts nationwide. In her heartfelt post, Sarah shared the devastating story of the Finnemore family — Gareth, Olivia, and their two sons, Garth and Harry.

Last Saturday, their lives were forever changed when a driver allegedly overtook a truck on a blind rise along a rural road in KwaZulu-Natal, causing a catastrophic accident that involved 13 people. Twelve did not survive, including Gareth, Olivia, and 14-year-old Garth. Miraculously, 12-year-old Harry emerged as the sole survivor.

The news of this unimaginable loss has struck a chord, prompting an outpouring of love and compassion. People from near and far have rallied to support Harry, who is still recovering in the hospital. Amidst the heartbreak, a beautiful moment of kindness has already touched Harry’s life — a message from South African rugby star Jesse Kriel, which, according to Sarah, “really boosted his spirits.”

Inspired by Jesse’s gesture, Sarah reached out to us at Good Things Guy with a heartfelt plea: “Brent, I need your help, please! Harry received a message from Jesse Kriel, and it brought a smile to his face. He’s still in ICU, but he’s going to be okay. However, the road ahead is tough. His mom’s sister, Lexi, mentioned that any messages from cricket and rugby players would be amazing, but honestly, I think it doesn’t have to be just celebrities. Imagine what a few heartfelt messages from anyone could do for a 12-year-old boy facing such unimaginable pain. I’d love to get a few messages to him.”

Sarah’s request is a call to all of us. Yes, messages from celebrities can be uplifting, but the truth is that each of us has the power to make an impact. Whether you are a world-famous athlete or an everyday hero, your words of support can bring light to Harry in this dark time.

So, we’re asking you — our incredible Good Things Guy community — to do what you do best: send your love, encouragement, and strength to Harry. Write something meaningful and show this young South African that he is not alone, that there is a whole nation standing with him, cheering him on as he heals both physically and emotionally.

While nothing can truly fill the void left by the loss of Harry’s parents and brother, the collective support from people around the country and the world can help to ease his pain, one kind word at a time. Together, let’s wrap Harry in a blanket of love and support. Let’s remind him that there are countless people who care, countless hearts that are holding space for him. In moments like these, our strength as a community shines the brightest. So, take a moment today, write a message, and be a part of something truly special.

Remember, it doesn’t take a celebrity to make a difference. It takes a human being with a heart full of compassion.

Leave a message in the comments or send one to messagesforharry@gmail.com. We will make sure all messages are sent to Sarah to deliver to Harry.

“To Harry, with love from the Good Things Guy team, while the path ahead may feel difficult and uncertain, please remember that you are not walking it alone. Thousands of hearts are reaching out to you, filled with love, prayers, and gentleness. We’re all here, holding you in our thoughts. Know that an entire country is lifting you up, surrounding you with care, and sending you all the warmth and comfort it has to give.”

South Africa, let’s rally together, one message at a time. Let’s show Harry just how powerful love and kindness can be.

Security officer Vincent Kwananda, critically injured while protecting others, inspires South Africans with his remarkable resilience and determination to recover and help others on their journey.

Johannesburg, South Africa (07 September 2024) – Every day, South Africans step up with immense courage, often risking their lives to protect their communities. It’s a powerful reminder of the strength and resilience that runs through the veins of this country. Vincent Kwananda, a security officer, embodies this unwavering spirit, even after facing unimaginable challenges.

Vincent, a 41-year-old security officer, was on duty at a garage shop in Delmas, Mpumalanga, when his life changed forever. On a fateful day in February last year, three armed robbers stormed in and opened fire. Vincent was shot, suffering fractures to his T1 and T2 thoracic vertebrae, leaving him with critical and life-changing injuries. He woke up in the hospital from a coma, unable to recall what had happened but knowing instinctively that his life had taken a drastic turn.

“When I woke up from a coma in the hospital, they told me what had happened. I didn’t ask many questions. I couldn’t remember anything,” Vincent recalls.

His recovery journey has been nothing short of remarkable, marked by resilience, determination, and an unbreakable spirit.

Vincent’s injuries were severe, but he was determined to overcome them. He was transferred to Netcare Rehabilitation Hospital in Auckland Park six weeks after the shooting, where his journey to regain independence began.

“When patients first arrive, they’re only just starting to recover from an acute, traumatic event. They are often anxious and still in a physical state of recovery,” explains Dr. Aneesa Khan, a general practitioner with a special interest in physical medicine and rehabilitation.

Vincent, too, faced this reality, experiencing weakness from the chest downward.

Jessica Morris, a senior occupational therapist at the hospital, noted Vincent’s limited hand movement initially.

“His occupational therapist taught him how to use assisted devices like universal cuffs to gain more independence. A year later, he can extend his fingers a little and form a grasp mostly without these devices,” she shares.

Despite these challenges, Vincent was adamant about returning to work. “He was determined to go back to work from his first day here. Our hope is that one day he will be able to be fully reintegrated back at work,” Morris adds.

However, Vincent’s recovery was not just about physical rehabilitation. He took it upon himself to mentor newer patients, offering hope and support in their journeys.

“I would talk to them and say, you know what guys, crying doesn’t change anything. When you change your mindset, things start to happen,” Vincent recalls.

His empathy and leadership provided much-needed encouragement to those around him, showing that even in the darkest moments, there is always room for light and growth.

But Vincent’s story is more than just one of survival; it’s a powerful message of hope and resilience for South Africans. His determination to recover and help others along the way serves as an inspiration to a nation often battered by the scourge of crime and violence. For Vincent, returning to work was more than just a personal victory—it was a chance to show others that recovery is possible, even in the face of overwhelming odds.

His story also brings attention to the broader issue of violence in South Africa, a major cause of spinal injuries. The theme for this year’s International Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Day, “End Violence – Protect Spinal Cord,” serves as a poignant reminder of the impact of violence on individuals and communities.

As Dr. Khan notes, “There’s a lot of crime and gender-based violence-related injuries. Some of our patients have suffered devastating, life-changing injuries by being caught in the crossfire.”

Vincent’s journey has touched many lives. His spirit of never giving up, his willingness to learn new skills, and his dedication to supporting others on similar paths have made a lasting impact on those around him. His wife has stood by him every step of the way, and he credits her support as a crucial part of his recovery.

“She’s never complained, not for a single day,” he shares.

Today, Vincent continues to work as a security guard, a job that is not easy under any circumstances, let alone after such an injury. He uses his experience to motivate and teach others, helping them find their strength in moments of despair.

“When they see me, some of them can’t believe I’m alive. Some of them even cry when they see I’m in a wheelchair, and I comfort them,” he says.

Vincent’s journey is far from over, but he faces the future with optimism and determination.

As Jessica Morris reflects, “Mr. Kwananda reminds me how much the human spirit can accomplish when the person has that fight within them. The world could have given him a million reasons to give up, and he showed us a million reasons to fight harder.”

“This is What Community is About.”

The Kuils River community is applauding ‘Uncle Green Thumbs’ for the work he’s done to make a public space look luscious and beautiful!

Kuils River, South Africa (23 August 2024) — Over a thousand people have celebrated community champion and ‘Uncle Green Thumbs’ Graham Raatz who has planted a gorgeous garden in Highbury, Kuils Rivier—bringing residents and visitors alike immense joy.

Spotlighted by Kyle Hendricks on a Kuils Rivier community group, Graham is photographed with his garden, a spade in hand.

“This is what community is about,” remarked Kyle, who was soon followed by multiple people applauding Graham’s efforts.

Some have offered to bring Graham seedlings, while others encouraged people to bring him a coffee as a ‘thank you’ for his work.

Thanks to Uncle Green Thumbs, the Belhar road is giving areas like the West Coast National Park a run for their money this wildflower season! But, perhaps even more powerfully, the project has gotten many locals inspired to do their part in beautifying their public spaces!

As Beaty Daniels remarked: “Everyone in the community can learn from this [Uncle] and participate in keeping our environment clean and in full bloom…what would it take to lend a hand, a few packets of seeds and a few groceries here and there….Love you uncle you taking me right back to my childhood where everyone used to work together to make our area look spectacular.”

A South African student, Stephanie Pringle, who is Autistic, has quietly made history after she became the first in the world to pass her Cambridge exams with a letterboard! This is her beyond-inspiring story:

Johannesburg, South Africa (15 August 2024) — South African student Stephanie Pringle quietly made history earlier this year. As a non-speaking autistic student, Stephanie used a letterboard to write her Cambridge exams for Extended Mathematics and Business Studies—making her the first non-speaking autistic student in the whole world to do so!

“Stephanie’s story is a beautiful reminder of what’s possible when we embrace neurodiversity and give everyone the tools they need to succeed. It’s one of those feel-good stories that makes you want to cheer for her and the progress we’re making in inclusive education,” shares Nicola Killops who put Stephanie’s achievement on Good Things Guy’s radar and is a mother of a young adult with high-functioning autism and dyslexia herself.

Stephanie (19) was diagnosed with a developmental delay just before she turned two years old and with Autism at four.

“Steph was stuck, repeating Grade 1 and 2 work for about eight years with no reliable means of communication,” shares her mom, Zelda.“She was often frustrated and upset because she couldn’t express herself or prove her understanding, leading to frequent tantrums.”

Stephanie also has apraxia, which makes it difficult for her to perform tasks on command, no matter how willing she is to do them. This contributes to her non-verbalism and prevents her from writing reliably.

However, this is where clever tools like the letterboard come in as an essential resource part of the broader spectrum of augmentative and alternative communication tools that help overcome communication barriers. For Stephanie, it wasn’t just a tool to communicate; it was the beginning of unlocking her true potential.

“Once she could express herself using the letterboard, the problematic behaviour, anger and tantrums nearly vanished,” Zelda says, recalling how everything changed for the best.

At its core purpose, the letterboard can help non-speakers to express themselves simply by pointing to letters and synchronising cognitive and motor skills. But as Stephanie has shown, it can help with personal growth and other barrier breakers that many Autistic people face.

With the help of trained facilitators, students are trained to work with the letter board and communicate effectively while regulating their bodies—a big win to combat experiences like overstimulation and meltdowns.

After connecting with her letterboard, Stephanie progressed rapidly—jumping from Grade 2 to Grade 7 maths during lockdown. Now that she was finally able to communicate in a way others could understand, she shared something remarkable—she had already taught herself how to read at 4-years-old.

Free to share her thoughts about the world and tackle her education in a new way, when school opened after lockdown and Stephanie came back with a bang, having long outgrown the curriculum of her previous studies. When asked which grade she was ready to join, she proudly placed a winning bet on matric.

Using a letterboard to pass her examinations was no small feat, but it’s one that’s made her school, family, the Autism community and South Africa immensely proud.

Jacqui McKelvey, EDU360’s principal and co-founder (Stephanie’s specialist school) explains the process to getting her student through the goalposts:

“We consulted with [the British Council’s team] to secure the concessions Steph needed, including a Regulation and Communication Partner, a Scribe and Reader, a separate venue, additional time, and an individual invigilator to oversee the process…together we ensured that everything was in place for Steph to do her best, right up to the moment she arrived to begin her exams.”

The rest, of course, is history.

“It’s crucial to understand that just because someone can’t speak, it doesn’t mean they don’t understand or have something valuable to say,” Stephanie says.
