caracal on Lion's Head

A paraglider pilot managed to capture the incredible footage of a wild Caracal wandering around Lion’s Head in Cape Town.

Cape Town, South Africa – On Sunday morning, two para-gliders went up Lion’s Head, Cape Town, for an early morning flight and were greeted by a rare sighting of a wild Caracal.

“When we arrived at the launch at 6h30, Iain spotted the Caracal in the bushes, feeding on something.”

“It disappeared for a few minutes, then suddenly reappeared on the mat, unperturbed by our presence. It stayed near us for about 10 minutes, before heading down the mountain towards Clifton.”

The Caracal is a medium-sized wild cat native to Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia and India. The mammal is characterised by a robust build, long legs, a short face, long tufted ears and long canine teeth.

Typically nocturnal, the Caracal is highly secretive and difficult to observe. It is territorial and lives mainly alone or in pairs.
