For the first time ever, The Earthshot Prize is set to be held in South Africa. And, travelling across the pond for the prize-giving in Cape Town? None other than the Prince of Wales—Prince William!

Cape Town, South Africa (04 October 2024) — It was a massive deal when it was announced that Earthshot 2024 will be held in Cape Town—a first for South Africa. Now, as Earthshot Week approaches, the City is rallying all its royal etiquette to welcome the Prince of Wales himself to town.

Not just heading across the pond for the better weather and scenic views, Prince William is actually the founder of Earthshot—the biggest opportunity for innovative environmental enthusiasts to share their solutions to the Earth’s most pressing problems.

Every year since it began in 2020, the Earthshot Prize has focused on 5 key elements, namely:

  • Protect and restore nature
  • Clean our air
  • Revive our oceans
  • Build a waste-free world
  • Fix our climate

Throughout the year, nominees are screened and narrowed down. This year, early 400 nominees hailed from Africa, while just 15 have been identified as finalists. In good news for our continent, 3 of the finalists are African.

At the prize-giving, five finalists will win £1 million (over R23 million) to help them effect their eco-solutions.

Cape Town can’t wait to play host to yet another exceptional series of events, especially those which will change the world.

As Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis shares:

“We look forward to welcoming the Prince of Wales to Cape Town for this prestigious global prize-giving ceremony. The Earthshot Prize is all about innovation on the biggest environmental and climate issues of our time. We are proud to be associated with such an event as a leading city for environmental protection and innovation on the African continent.”

Earthshot Week will take place in November, while prize-giving will take place on 6 November 2024.

As a kaleidoscope of colours takes to the skies of Cape Town in kite form, so too will hope for mental health awareness:

Cape Town, South Africa (03 October 2024) — The Cape Town International Kite Festival is far more than a celebration of kites. For many, it’s an occasion of openness, not unlike the skies where the kites get to roam. It’s also a gathering of strength and rising above that which attempts to hold us down, just like the kite’s fight against its string. In the world of mental health movements, the Kite Festival continues to play a big role, one that’s been cultivated for over 30 years.

Back in 1994, Cape Mental Health (an organisation that provides mental health services to vulnerable children and adults in disadvantaged communities) decided on the Cape Town Kite Festival as its flagship event. Over the years, it has created a freeing space for artists, ambassadors, kiters, volunteers and the mental health care community.

Because October is Mental Health Awareness Month, the festival coincides with the most important time for mental health advocacy across the world.

Cape Mental Health is a champion of advocacy and support, aiming to provide interventions that restore hope, build resilience, and empower individuals and communities.

The theme for this year’s Cape Town Kite Festival is aptly ‘Hope on a String’, and each kite string tug reminds us of the inner strength and resilience within us all.

Kite Festival Run Down:

23 October: Set to be held at Heideveld Sports Field on the Cape Flats, children with intellectual disabilities from CMH’s Special Education & Care Centres, along with Grade R learners and preschoolers from Heideveld, will all join forces for the Community Fly Day.

26 October: The EduKite Competition will see primary schools enjoy a kite-making and kite-decorating competition, with the prize-giving ceremony set to be held at Curro Century City, supporting mental health awareness.

27 October: Melkbosstrand Beach will ignite with colour and kiters as local and international professionals set their kites to the sky for the Pop-Up Fly Event.

How to Support #HopeOnAString for Cape Mental Health

Cape Mental Health has launched a crowdfunding campaign to support its imperative work. Any donations will make a significant impact in providing mental health support and building resilience in those who most need it, and several celebrities, including Majozi and Kim Syster, have rallied behind the cause!

You can support the campaign here.

Informal waste pickers in Bellville are to be kitted out with new and improved trolleys to do their jobs safely and more efficiently!

Bellville, South Africa (01 October 2024) — Ever seen a waste picker struggling through busy roads with a massive bag of goods hanging on for its life atop a makeshift cart? Most of us have. For many informal waste pickers, managing the load carefully in this way is just another day at work. But, what if there was a better way to set their work in motion? The good news is, there is, and it’s happening in Bellville!

The better.bellville.together initiative has, since last year, been working equal parts creatively and tirelessly to improve the lives of the Bellville community.

We’ve highlighted many of the initiative’s success stories (often featuring fabulous community art) before on Good Things Guy. Beyond the art that inspires public pride, the better.bellville.together initiative is a big pioneering effort dedicated to revitalising Bellville in three main ways: community engagement, business investment and sustainable practices.

Thanks to the initiative, taxi ranks have been revamped, more jobs have been created, more gardens have been grown and more bins (including protea-inspired ones) for recycling have set up shop.

Now, it’s the waste pickers’ turn to benefit from community upliftment.

Recently, better.bellville.together teamed up with eco-empowering community Waste-Ed and worked with other businesses as well as government departments to bring fresh trolley designs to Bellville! This, in an effort to help informal waste pickers do their important work for their own livelihood and the environment in a better way.

With a bicycle built to pick up speed, a safer area for collections and an extended top area for more capacity, the cleverly designed ‘Wheels of Change’ trolly helps tackle a lot of problems with a single pair of wheels.

As the Greater Tygerberg Partnership shares:

“The trolleys are tailored specifically to meet the needs of waste pickers, offering a user-centred design that enhances both work efficiency and safety.”

Moreover, they are designed to help reduce the number of trips waste pickers traditionally have to make, thanks to fantastic engineering.

Meanwhile, in news where waste made headlines, an incredible series of Mona Lisa masterpieces are showing us all the power of upcycling. You can read all about it here.

15-year-old Daniel Rush is not your average rubric cube enthusiast. He’s a master cube solver who has won the title as Africa’s champion and has the ability to solve a cube ‘puzzle’ faster than the time it’d take to read this intro!

Cape Town, South Africa (30 September 2024) – Most of us have felt the awe and sensation of satisfaction that comes with witnessing someone crack a rubric cube or, better yet, solving one ourselves. Even if it took days, the feeling is pretty unparalleled. But what if you could do it in a matter of seconds? Under intense pressure? And at 15 years old? If the aforementioned sounds impossible, you haven’t met Daniel Rush—Cape Town’s champion cube solver.

Never mind Cape Town; Daniel has actually won the title of Africa’s champion cube solver before. With the ability to crack a cube in just under 5 seconds, it’s not hard to understand why!

Daniel has solved 2008 cubes of different specs and in different ways (including being blindfolded) during his time as a competitor. You’d think Daniel is someone who has been in the game for decades. Yet, the champion hasn’t even finished high school yet.

Competing since the age of 9, Daniel’s dedicated a lot of his young life to cubes of all magnitudes. He boasts 80 gold wins, 37 silver and 28 bronze as per the World Cube Association and has competed at every level—from national to world championships.

His magic might be far beyond the imaginings of many who have never experienced the rush of a solved cube, but despite its unique nature, it’s certainly impressed his country and continues to impress the world.

Khayelitsha’s Mdzananda Clinic recently got a special visit and shining stamp of approval from the ‘big dogs’ after the City of Cape Town’s Alderman JP Smith popped in:

Khayelitsha, South Africa (27 September 2024) — Khayelitsha-based Mdzananda Clinic recently welcomed a visit from the ‘big dogs’ after the City of Cape Town’s Alderman JP Smith popped in to see the clinic’s critical work for animals firsthand (and gave them a stamp of approval).

Mdzananda is a place of miracles for many community pets in Khayelitsha; offering a myriad of services from medical care (including medical care on the go thanks to their mobile clinics and animal ambulance), educational programmes that better equip the community to care for pets and temporary homes to the animals.

As the only veterinary health care service and shelter in the vast Khayelitsha community (where around 300,000 companion animals live), the Clinic’s services aren’t just helpful, but essential.

“One is humbled when you get to a place like Mdzananda. Like many animal welfare organisations, they have to perform miracles every day with very limited resources. For the last 28 years, they have served a very large area with big needs. Over time, they have added bit by bit to their facilities and services they offer the residents of Khayelitsha,” remarks Alderman JP Smith.

During his tour, Alderman Smith got the see their consulting rooms, cat ward, shelter, hospital and operating theatre as well as many of the homeless puppies and dogs.

“I was excited to hear of their vision for rebuilding this collection of structures into an animal clinic they can be proud of, and I will do whatever I can to help them achieve this.”

“Please consider giving your support, whether financially with donations in kind, or by adopting one of the 48 dogs and many cars in their shelter,” Alderman Smith urged, giving the clinic stamp of approval.

“We were absolutely thrilled to receive Alderman Smith’s valuable time to host him at our facility,” shared Marcelle du Plessis, Fundraising and Communications Executive. “And the dogs loved giving him slobbery kisses!”

Having a government official’s support is a big deal for any organisation and for Mdzananda, it will hopefully guide their vision to come to fruition.

Meanwhile in other ways to support the charity, you can also support Mdzananda by supporting their #RunForRescues at the Cape Town marathon, which you can learn more about here.

Hundreds of kilograms of waste, consisting of both big eyesores and tiny pollutants, were removed from Milnerton Lagoon Beach over the weekend!

Milnerton, South Africa (23 September 2024) — It was a big weekend for beaches across the world thanks to the celebration of International Coastal Clean-up Day on Saturday. Amongst the many South Africans who joined forces to clean up coastal areas were those who united to tackle Milnerton Lagoon Beach, which, after the dust settled, proved to be an effort well worth embarking on.

At the beach, Save a Fishie and volunteers worked their way through clothes, bottle tops and nappies. They cleared around 400 kg on Saturday and 394 kg on Sunday.

Not only did Milnerton Lagoon Beach get to enjoy the eco-version of an ‘extreme home makeover’, it also saw scavengers on the hunt for nurdles as part of the Great Global Nurdle Hunt—a global initiative underway this September that’s shown just how much the small things can add up in the worst way.

What are Nurdles?

Nurdles are essentially plastic pellets that are often mistaken for tiny stones. While they are small in size, their problematic magnitude is great. As Nurdle Hunt informs, the plastic industry loses 22 trillion nurdles a year, contributing to their place as the second most dominant source of microplastic pollution.

“2024 is a big year for ending nurdle pollution, “ share the Nurdle Hunt team. “Results from The Great Global Nurdle Hunt 2024 will be used by NGOs to highlight the issue to governments and call for change at the United Nations negotiations for a global plastics treaty.”

Although International Coastal Cleanup Day is over, South Africans still have Heritage Day to use as the perfect excuse not just to braai our hearts out, but to take the time to tackle a clean-up or two in an effort to preserve the one heritage we all share—our natural heritage!

Valhalla Park Library just got a colourful upgrade thanks to its new Lego corner that hopes to inspire learning through play!

Cape Town, South Africa (15 September 2024) — A new Lego corner has launched at Valhalla Park Library in exciting news for the community and especially members who are parents.

After the unused space was identified as an ideal spot to be transformed into something useful for the community, the Library Information Services and the Community Arts and Culture Development departments joined forces to create what would become the local Lego corner.

The corner stands proudly as a place that can inspire learning through play; aiming to stimulate creativity, innovation, team building and even coding.

The Library hopes to see the project connect with other community groups, from early childhood teachers to seniors, to help develop spatial and fine motor skills, creativity, hand-eye coordination and other benefits that all start with simple building blocks.

For children, Lego is a particularly nifty way of utilising both sides of the brain; helpful in exercising those logical muscles as well as flexing creativity, both of which are important assets when it comes to foundational skills that help make school that much more manageable.

This comes as another chapter of good news for local libraries, following more good news from Johannesburg earlier this week when Florida Library launched its own Mini Blind Library to make information more accessible to the visually impaired and blind.

A new garden-fledged with natural heritage has opened in Majik Forest as created by local ‘flower king’ Leon Kluge, who won gold for SA at the renowned RHS Chelsea Flower Show!

Majik Forest, South Africa (09 September 2024) — Spring and all things blossoming and new go hand-in-hand, and for Majik Forest, this sentiment couldn’t be more true thanks to a new community garden that’s opened up in the beloved area just in time for the season!

A conservation area in Durbanville, Majik Forest is a unique natural space in Cape Town that’s known and loved for both its tranquillity and the chance it provides to spend time with critically endangered flora.

Early last week, Majik welcomed an addition to its natural offerings thanks to the opening of the Renosterveld Garden as developed by the Wildflower Stepping Stones Project Group (WSSP)—a local group that conserves pockets of locally indigenous wildflowers to combat habitat fragmentation.

Created by flower king Leon Kluge, who won gold for South Africa at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show and the Singapore Garden Festival this year, as well as his right-hand, artist Tristan Woudberg, alongside WSSP and the Recreation and Parks Department, the Renostereld Garden is a certified wonder!

20 locally indigenous trees (Wild Peach and Wild Olive) were also planted as a special nod to Arbor Month.

The garden is now a special showcase of the beauty and diversity of the indigenous Swartland Shale Renosterveld—an endangered vegetation type that is rare in the area that it once flourished in before agricultural and urban development.

The Garden welcomes all who visit this treasured part of the Cape to stop by and stands as a luscious reminder of the iconic plant series part of our natural heritage as well as the unsung heroes working hard to protect and restore them.

Cape Town is commending the many volunteers and civilian heroes who have given over 18,000 hours of service during disasters, playing an imperative role in helping communities during the most dire times:

Cape Town, South Africa (02 September 2024) — Severe weather has surged in the past two years for Cape Town, with residents facing everything from damaging winds to flooding and wildfires. But, thanks to volunteers and the selfless time they have given (over 18,000 hours at that), these disasters have always had a team of helping heroes.

Because of the surge, the Disaster Risk Management Centre (DRMC) has had to stretch itself farther and wider over time. However, the crops of volunteers in their network have come to the rescue time and time again as the unsung heroes of disaster management, helping them save and protect lives.

The DRMC has 419 volunteers who work in teams across the metropolis. When trouble strikes, they are activated through the Disaster Operations Centre via their unit coordinators, who will then assist officials who respond to affected communities.

They are trained regularly in first aid, firefighting, occupational health and safety interventions and much more so that the next time they’re called to a cause, they are even more prepared.

To put into perspective just how much time they have given to their communities, the City of Cape Town has shared that the volunteers spent 18,472 hours assisting the DRMC officials. That means more than 769 days of voluntary service!

“The demands on our resources have only grown in recent years, as we witness the changing weather patterns and its impact on our city. We couldn’t keep up, if not for our volunteers. And they’re not only there during the times of disaster – they are also very visible in our daily education and awareness initiatives, going door-to-door in communities to advocate for disaster mitigation.

“Some of them have been in the ranks for many years, and we truly appreciate their commitment and dedication to the cause, whether during floods or frantic wildfires. I want to express the City’s gratitude for their years of service, acts of bravery and contributions to the community,” said Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security, Alderman JP Smith.

Cape Town has been crowned the winner of the One Planet City Challenge for South Africa—a huge victory in the fight against climate change that has put the City in the running to win the global crowning!

Cape Town, South Africa (26 August 2024) — The City of Cape Town has been crowned the national winner of the prestigious WWF One Planet City Challenge (OPCC) for 2024! This means that Cape Town is now in the running to become one of One Planet City Challenge’s global winners, set to be announced in November this year.

Three South African cities were in the race for the title earlier this year as finalists (Tshwane, eThekwini and Cape Town); each making their residents proud for the strong leadership they’ve portrayed in the fight against climate change. In case you weren’t in the loop, the OPCC challenge has, since 2011, been a leading initiative driving cities to set ambitious climate targets aligned with the Paris Agreement’s goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 °C. It’s the largest climate challenge for local governments around the world!

This year, over 350 cities across nearly 50 countries competed by submitting their climate action plans or projects through the CDP-ICLEI Track, an accessible reporting platform for cities globally.

In exciting news for Cape Town, this is the second time the City has been named a national winner. In 2014, Cape Town became the winner when it impressed the international jury by demonstrating that the pursuit of a low carbon future and climate mitigation was possible in a city with so many development priorities.

The 2024 jury commended Cape Town for its emphasis on impactful actions, including compact urbanisation and the electrification of the transport sector, sharing that the City had achieved a striking balance between adaptation and mitigation efforts, which had been integrated with the UN’s Strategic Development Goals across all departments.

Additionally, Cape Town’s actions during South Africa’s energy crisis were also deemed noteworthy and as a demonstration of commitment to transitioning toward a renewable energy system.

As Dr Meggan Spires, Director of Climate Change, Energy & Resilience at ICLEI Africa, beamed:

“The City of Cape Town is one of ICLEI’s longest standing member cities, having joined our global network in 1994. The City of Cape Town has been a global trail blazer for climate change action for decades. ICLEI Africa congratulates the City of Cape Town on being named the South African national winner of WWF’s One Planet City Challenge. It is a significant and well- deserved accolade”.

Daniel Sullivan, Director of the Risk and Resilience Department in the City of Cape Town, adds proudly:

“Cape Town is proud to be the national winner of the One Planet City Challenge which

acknowledges our commitment to ambitious and transparent climate action. Climate change threats present an opportunity for all of us to work together to adapt and thrive, building programmes of collective action and sharing best practice. Initiatives like OPCC are important platforms for cities to signal and drive this collaborative approach.”
