Nine-year-old Elizabeth Pretorius, a bright-eyed Grade 3 learner from Curro Langebaan, recently made her mark on the world stage at the Biathle World Championships in Egypt.

Port Said, Egypt (21 October 2024) – At only nine years old, Elizabeth Pretorius displayed remarkable skill and determination in the exhilarating sport of biathle (Biathle, also referred to as modern biathlon, is a sport that was derived from modern pentathlon) at the Biathle World Championships in Egypt – proving that age is just a number and that with passion and perseverance, anything is possible!

The Grade 3 learner from Curro Langebaan represented South Africa with great determination as she tackled the waters and the beach track, proving that dynamite does indeed come in small packages.

Despite her young age, Elizabeth faced tough competition from athletes around the globe but refused to crack under pressure.

Over four gruelling days, she competed in individual and team biathle relays, battling through challenging conditions both in the water and on the beach as her races combined sea swimming and beach running. Her determination and resilience were evident in every race.

According to her school, Elizabeth was one of the youngest in her U11 age group. She finished 8th in her team relay and 27th in the Biathle individual races, giving her a world ranking of 36th place!

“Elizabeth, we are so proud of you! Not only your amazing accomplishments but your dedication and fighting spirit. May this be the first of many for you,” Curro Langebaan said.

As Elizabeth continues to grow and develop her skills, we can’t wait to see what she will accomplish in the future!

South African artist, Jake Michael Singer, is to represent our country amid the world’s top contemporary artists in a prestigious exhibition overlooking none-other-than the Pyramids of Giza!

Global, South Africa (13 October 2024) — Thousands of years later, the Pyramids of Giza still stand magnificently as a glimpse into the world of ancients.

They are arguably one of the most fascinating structures from the Bronze Age and uniquely, structures that evoke as much (if not more) awe now as they did back then.

Considering that the pyramids have seen more of human history unfold than almost any other trope of engineering around the world, it goes without saying that it’s no small feat to showcase art among them. But, if you’re celebrated South African contemporary artist Jake Michael Singer, that feat is soon to be a reality!

Jake, who is based in Johannesburg and Istanbul, is set to mark a big mark on the global art scene with his participation in ‘Forever Is Now.04’, an internationally acclaimed outdoor art exhibition.

Planned to take place on the famous plateau overlooking the Pyramids, Jake is one of 12 leading contemporary artists from all over the world who will be taking part.

A celebration of art, history and culture, Jake will be representing South Africa with his sculpture ‘We Will Meet Again in the Sky’.

A monumental work that boasts 5 metres in height, the piece moulds themes of connection, transcendence and collective memory into an interpretation of the ancient Egyptian bird Bennu.

As Egyptian mythology buffs will know, Bennu is a symbol of creation and rebirth; transcending the boundaries of the physical and the eternal.

“Participating in ‘Forever Is Now.04’ is a profound moment for me,” says the artist.

“The setting amidst the ancient Pyramids of Giza is deeply inspiring and resonates with the themes of my work. I hope ‘We Will Meet Again in the Sky’ will spark reflection and dialogue among viewers from all corners of the globe.”

‘Forever Is Now04’ will run from 24 October 2024 to 16 November 2024.

The South African aerobic gymnastics team has brought immense pride to their nation by securing double silver medals at the 2024 Aerobic African Championships in Egypt.

Cairo, Egypt (18 September 2024) – South African aerobic gymnasts brought their A-game at the 2024 Aerobic African Championships held in Cairo, Egypt.

Bringing home double silver medals in the Mixed Trios sections after competing on an international stage, they showcased that their aerobic skills, agility, coordination, endurance, and prowess are not to be undermined.

The team was accompanied by FIG AER Brevet Judge, Warren Lucas, who is behind the development of the High Performance Aerobic Gymnastics programme project in South Africa.

Sporting their new silver medals, seniors Kutlwano Maine, Tshepiso Motone and Olebogeng Ntsoelengoe, as well as juniors Jordan Vally, Hally Hendricks and Leah Slimmert, have made their country proud with their exceptional skills and unwavering determination.

“Well done also to Jahnika Woodman (AG Individual Women), Tshepiso Motone (Senior Individual Men) and Kutlwano Maine (Senior Individual Women) who finished fourth in their respective categories.

“We are extremely proud of the performances our gymnasts put on display,” Gymnastics South Africa shared.

The commendable victory has also set the tone for the highly anticipated annual National Championships, Gym Games 2024. Set to take place in Cape Town, the event is expected to be the largest yet, with more than 3,200 gymnasts from across South Africa competing over ten days.

Gym Games will take place from September 19 to 29, featuring talented gymnasts across various disciplines such as Rhythmic, Trampoline, Acrobatics, Aerobics, Parkour, Artistic Men and Women, and Rope Skipping.

“The Gym Games is our number one event where the best of the best come together in a 10-day celebration of gymnastics.

“For many gymnasts, participating in Gym Games is a dream come true. We are excited to bring this event back to the Mother City and look forward to celebrating the incredible talent within our gymnastics community,” said Adele Heine, President of Gymnastics South Africa.

The event is open to the public, and will take place across two venues. These are the Wynberg Military Sport Complex in Wynberg and the Western Cape Sports School in Kuilsriver. For more information visit https://gymnasticssa.co.za/.

Mzansi’s national junior chef team, representing the diverse flavours of South African cuisine, secured a bronze medal at the 2024 African Culinary Cup.

Cairo, Egypt (05 September 2024) – South Africa is popular for many things, and good food is certainly one of them. From good old braai vleis, the spicy curries of Indian heritage, to the fresh seafood of the coast, the country offers a mouthwatering array of culinary delights.

Sharing these amazing flavours with a flair of culinary expertise was SA’s very own national chef junior team led by Chef Siyabulela Kobo at the 2024 African Culinary Cup.

African Culinary Cup

The South African Chef’s Association was overwhelmed with pride and joy to announce that the team achieved a bronze medal at the international cooking competition, where they went head-to-head with some of Africa’s and the Middle East’s most promising, talented chefs.

The African Culinary Cup nurtures and enhances the culinary skills and experiences of young culinarians throughout the region. The core mission of the competition is to inspire chefs to uphold the highest standards of culinary excellence and professionalism, SA Chef Magazine explains.

To make the top three in such an esteemed culinary event is a major feat for Kobo and his talented team of chefs; Marian Joppan, Thando Ntsele, Dana-Leigh Coleman and Thato Matlala.

We are so proud. You have proven that Mzansi is not to be played with when it comes to the kitchen!
