A group of 50 individuals united by their love for dance and their desire to make a difference, have triumphed at the IDO Hip Hop World Championships for their masterpiece of choreography “Give Peace a Chance”.

Skopje, North Macedonia (16 October 2024) – Dancers showed up in their numbers to create a breathtaking spectacle at the IDO Hip Hop World Championships 2024 which kicked off with a vibrant Parade of Nations.

The week-long World Championships competition is the largest of its kind on the IDO calendar and attracts an unprecedented 5,000 dancers from around the globe.

Upon landing in Skopje, North Macedonia, each dancer has been carrying the weight of their nation’s hopes, their hearts filled with a mix of excitement and determination.

When things got intense, and it was time to take the stage and showcase weeks, if not months, of rehearsals, South Africa delivered an outstanding performance!

Team South Africa coach Eunice Marais was thrilled to announce that the dance production, Give Peace a Chance, triumphed at the World Championships and the team was crowned first-place champions.

“This piece of choreography, performed by 50 talented dancers from South Africa, spreads a powerful message of hope, peace, and love to the world during troubled times,” shared Eunice.

The team of dancers received their Protea colours before departing for North Macedonia and will return home with a coveted trophy for their stellar performance!

43 South African Irish dancers have qualified to represent our country at the Irish Dancing World Championship!

Global (08 October 2024) — In dazzling news from the local dancing scene, 43 talented South African Irish dancers have successfully qualified to take part in the 2025 Irish Dancing World Championships!

These talents will represent four provinces (Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape and the Western Cape) as well as 9 different dancing schools in a region synonymous with the dance—Dublin.

The dancers’ success comes after an electrifying season of fancy footwork showcased at the 25th anniversary of the South African Irish Dancing Championship that was held in late September. There, respected judges from Ireland flew all the way to Gauteng to be a part of the adjudication panel—a worthwhile trip thanks to the impressive skills, energy and teamwork on display at Nationals; all of which earned them the judges’ favour!

Those selected as part of the squad of 43, include dancers as young as 10 years old and seasoned performers in their 20s.

Beyond individual spotlights, several local dancing schools have also qualified to take part in team events at the World Championships; an area where South Africa has already made its mark with the Robinson Dance Studio famously claiming the Junior Figure Dancing Section in 2022.

Our South African Irish Dancers will be competing from 13 to 20 April 2025.

Bettering the Mdantsane community is Ben Rexana—a dance teacher who provides free lessons to kids and an animal lover who helps sterilise and feed community pets.

Mdantsane, South Africa (23 September 2024) — Benjamin Rexana isn’t your typical dance teacher.

For starters, his studio is a non-profit that’s accessible to the community of Mdantsane children as a means to fill their time with the joy of dance. Secondly, a big part of his work involves helping animals in need. At first glance, you might wonder what the thread is that connects dance, dogs and kids. But when you look deeper, you see what Ben sees: a community with happier children means more room to teach them about animal welfare and in turn, primes the next generation of animals to be in better hands.

Since 2008, Ben has been running CyfaDance K9-Care Community Development—a free dance lessons service for Mdantsane’s children.

The word of Ben’s efforts has spread far and wide out of Mdantsane, earning him a place as one of the 30 Young Mandelas circa 2022 in the Compassion category and inspiring people like East London’s Kirsty Monk who put his work on Good Things Guy’s radar.

“It is really is inspiring what he does with so little and much of an impact he is making on these young kids,” shares Kirsty, who adds that Ben’s work, beyond keeping kids off the streets is also making a difference for the animals in their area from feeding to getting the dogs sterilised.

“For me the kids I teach are [as] important as the dogs I care about,” says Ben. He adds that the children help him feed the dogs.

When he’s not actively feeding the community’s animals, working on a sterilisation campaign, connecting the pets to vets or empowering kids through dance, Ben works on educating the community on animal and child welfare, acting as a voice for those who cannot speak up for themselves and breaking stigmas.

In very exciting news on the dance side of his community work, CYFA Community Development has been invited to the 2024 Intercontinental Dance and Battles Championship Finals—set to take place in Sea Point from 27 to 29 September!

The Championship Finals will see over 400 top dancers from Lesotho to Seychelles compete—the opportunity for the young dancers of Mdantsane.

Ben is currently looking for donations to help his dancers get to their big moment in the spotlight, and donations to the dream can be made here.

Despite his young age, Seth Squires has brought immense pride to South Africa by clinching four gold medals at the prestigious World Lyrical Dance Federation Championships.

Johannesburg, South Africa (06 August 2024) – Seth Squires’ exceptional talent and unwavering dedication have propelled him to the top of the international dance stage.

The talented Jazz dancer, Seth Squires flew the South African flag high at the World Lyrical Dance Federation (WLDF) where he not only participated, but even won four gold medals.

The World Lyrical Dance Federation, located in Dublin, Ireland, is an international organisation that is committed to the growth and development of Lyrical Dance internationally.

Sharing his achievements was Seth’s father Geoff Squires who could not help but get emotional when he reflected on his son’s talent and performance at the international dance competition.

“Seth Squires stood on the top podium for the fourth time as he became the 18-year-old and older World Champion at the WLDF World Championships held in Scotland! He took gold in all 4 sections,” Geoff shared.

Seth competed in the Jazz Improv, Lyrical Improv, Jazz Solo and Lyrical Solo sections where he excelled remarkably.

Gushing at his son’s achievement, Geoff said words couldn’t comprehend just how proud he was of his world champion.

“Seth is the kindest, most loving and true to himself human being I have ever had the privilege of knowing and I am so proud to call him my son.

“His dancing only started six years ago, and his learning of Jazz started a mere 11 months ago! His hard work and determination have been something out of this world. A huge thank you to mom Bernadette for the years of running Seth around when I couldn’t, getting him to classes, competitions and shows,” Geoff shared.

‘Flying Boy’ and tiny dancer Sizolwethu Ngidi has become a world champion after he blew the competition off the dance floor at the World Freestyle Championships!

Global (05 July 2024) — Talk about a season of dancing delights! Following several achievements South Africa’s enjoyed on dance floors across the globe recently, tiny dancer Sizolwethu Ngidi, known affectionately as ‘Flying Boy’, has recently become a world champion, giving South Africa all the reasons to get up and groove with joy!

Hailing from Gamalakhe township in Port Shepstone, ‘Flying Boy’ let the wings of his dreams carry him from success to success. It didn’t come without incredible amounts of hard work for any dancer, let alone one who is still in primary school. Or without many obstacles to overturn; obstacles even seasoned dancers have lost their footing over. In fact, it was a starlit path with clear or easy access points. But, against the odds that come with the territory of the dancer’s world and all the privileges that put others ahead of the game, Sizolwethu made his way to England, not only to compete but to win.

Putting the fly in ‘flying our flag high’, our Flying Boy became the World Champion of the U12 Freestyle category, and the Vice World Champion for Slowdance in his age category.

From mall talent searches to the global stage, the talented dancer has come a long and beautiful way to meet his dreams. As photographer Vee Ramsayi shared in reflecting on Sizolwethu’s appearance at a South Coast mall talent search, “I knew the old saying, ‘dynamite comes in small packages’ is so true.”

His family and father, Dumisani, couldn’t be prouder of what he has achieved. Dumisani shared great thanks to everyone who supported the Flying Boy’s dreams, and to Junior Dilape for helping train Sizolwethu, sharing:

“Today, I mean right now I am getting ready to meet the World Champion and it’s all thanks to you.”

We may not know what the future has in store for this champion just yet, but if we had to place our bets, we’d say it’s one filled with sparkling stage lights, roaring applause and more young dancers believing in their wildest dreams because of people like Sizolwethu.

A mini cheerleader is bringing joy to both the DHL Dancers and crowds; stealing the show as a little star in the making!

Cape Town, South Africa (14 May 2024)—A mini cheerleader named Ella has stolen the show many times after she joined the DHL Dancers cheer team!

Little Ella is only six-years-old, but she’s already proven her natural stage presence and dance skills as she helps crowds get ready to root their hearts out during rugby matches. Word on the street is, she’s South Africa’s youngest cheerleader.

A post shared by BKT United Rugby Championship (@urc)

Her mom, Jenny Beck, who is the head choreographer and manager of the DHL dancers shares that Ella has essentially grown up in the dance studio that Jenny runs.

“She loves dancing almost as much as I do, and because she takes so many classes with me, she is really good for her age,” beams Jenny.

Ella joined the cheer team at the end of 2023.

“I thought it would be a fun addition to add a mini cheerleader to our team and and the crowd has absolutely loved her.”

A post shared by DHL Dancers (@dhldancers)

Speaking to the world of cheerleading and choreography, Jenny is a proud manager and choreographer of the team.

“My favourite part of the job is seeing my visions come together and hearing the crowd go crazy when our dancers run out on to the field. Obviously supporting our boys on the field and being part of the game day atmosphere is also something I will never get tired of.”

Of Ella’s role as mini-cheerleader, Jenny thinks its a great way to showcase that dance is for everyone.

“We perform just before the players run out and we are an essential part of getting the crowd excited before kick off. Having a child perform with us helps to show that dance is for everyone and even our younger fans can get involved in supporting our local rugby team. Dance is for everyone, and so is rugby.”

Renowned South African dance-maker Robyn Orlin’s work is set to return to home country as the dance veteran takes on the honour of being this year’s JOMBA! LEGACY ARTIST:

KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (28 April 2024) — The 26th annual JOMBA! Contemporary Dance Experience, hosted by University of KwaZulu Natal’s Centre for Creative Arts, has announced that it will honour veteran South African dance-maker Robyn Orlin as the 2024 JOMBA! Legacy Artist!

Orlin’s work we wear our wheels with pride and slap your streets with colour… we said ‘bonjour’ to satan in 1820 … will feature at JOMBA! which takes place at The Sneddon Theatre in Durban from 27 August to 8 September, with a satellite festival at The Market Theatre in Johannesburg from 11 to 14 September 2024.

Originally created in 2021 we wear our wheels …  is a collaboration with Johannesburg based Moving into Dance. This is a work that negotiates the complicated Durban rickshaw histories – and it finally comes to Durban.

Born in 1955 Johannesburg, Orlin’s vision of contemporary dance continues to be a kind of aesthetic eclecticism where she draws heavily on her own histories of ballet and modern, and a fascination with film and cinema. She has shifted the boundaries of what we consider dance to be, often falling into witty and biting political satire. Her love of kitsch, tutus and yellow plastic ducks has seen her creating iconic images that still haunt a South African dance landscape.

Orlin was trained at the London School of Contemporary Dance (1975-1980), then at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago (1990-1995). She began her career as a dancer, choreographer and teacher in South Africa, where she was quickly spotted, as much for the singularity of her dance making, as for the chaos that reigns in her creations.  Her (multiple prize-winning) dance piece Daddy, I have seen this piece six times before and I still don’t know why they’re hurting each other, which mocks the difficulties and shortcomings of the young rainbow nation, but also classical ballet as a trajectory of discrimination, enabled her to tour in Europe and brought her international recognition.

France has since become a creative territory for her and she has made her first film, Hidden Beauties, Dirty Stories (Ina/Arte, 2004), her first opera, Handel’s L’Allegro, il penseroso ed il moderato (Opéra Garnier, Paris, 2007), and her first theatre production, Les Bonnes, by Jean Genet (Théâtre de la Bastille, Paris, 2019) in France. She continues to create work in South Africa.

Artistic Director and curator, Lliane Loots says, “The JOMBA! festival’s 2024 overall curatorial theme and provocation is “the memory of home” and we can think of no South African artist better suited to unpack both the simplicity and complexity of this in her work. Memories are about history, belonging, sometimes suffocating nostalgia, and maybe also about charting new futures … Robyn’s work is all of this and more”.

“Orlin’s work has not been performed in South Africa for many years, and so it is with great thanks for the support from IFAS (Paris) and IFAS (Johannesburg), that JOMBA! welcomes her back to South Africa as our 2024 JOMBA! Legacy artist.”

JOMBA! takes place at The Sneddon Theatre in Durban from 27 August to 8 September, and the satellite festival takes place at The Market Theatre in Johannesburg from 11 to 14 September 2024.

we wear our wheels …  will be performed on 7 and 8 September in Durban and on 11 and 12 September at The Market in Johannesburg.

Global (24 April 2024) — As the clock winds down and the 2024 Olympics in Paris looms closer, dance enthusiasts can look forward to seeing break-dancing or breaking features at the world’s most prestigious Games!

Initially showcased at the Summer Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires 2018, the high viewership that break-dancing attracted slowly but surely led the dance style to have its own spot at the upcoming games in France.

For dancers around the world and even those who might not be breakers themselves, making room for break-dancing at such a renowned level of sporting showcase also means more room for opportunities in the world of dance.

According to the Olympics official website, the ‘breaking competition’ at the Olympic Games will be made up of two events for men and women with 16 breakers set to face off in “spectacular solo battles.”

“Athletes will use a combination of power moves—including windmills, the 6-step, and freezes—as they adapt their style and improvise to the beat of the DJ’s tracks in a bid to secure the judges’ votes and take home the first Olympic breaking medals,” the Olympics shared.

In South Africa, it goes without saying that dance is a huge part of our culture. Although break-dancing originated in New York, it is a style that has been carried throughout the world; incorporated into various hip hop dance niches.

Where does South Africa rank in the world of hip-hop dance? Well, the all-female dance crew Sublime brought home the gold from the Hip Hop Unite 2022 World Championships in 2022, with plans to follow in their own footsteps again this year.

With breaking set to take the Olympics by storm, many South African dancers can now set their sights on new goals and ways to make our country proud with their unique talents!

A Cape Town hip hop crew already showed the world how talented they are after winning gold at the Hip Hop World Championships. Their goal for 2024? To make SA proud by winning again!

Cape Town, South Africa (25 February 2024) — Cape Town-based Hip hop dance crew Sublime are polishing their dancing shoes and best moves to make South Africa proud in the dance genre yet again.

The all-female team of dancers coached by Corinne de Beer are no strangers to wearing victory’s crown. In 2022, they brilliantly brought home the gold after competing in the Hip Hop Unite 2022 World Championships—a massive moment for the local dance scene. Now, Sublime have big plans to make South Africa shine in dancing gold with another win at this year’s championships in Obidos Portugal!

No one-win-wonders, Sublime has relished in numerous achievements, including placing first at the Hip Hop International Regionals (2023), earning their Protea Colours in 2022, and coming in dazzling in third place at the Hip Hop Unite World Championships in France (2021).

As we know, with international competitions, there is limited, if any, funding for competitors to actually get to the events. But, as dance crew member Simóne Hepburn tells Good Things Guy, Sublime are fierce when it comes to fundraising.

“Anything from boerewors roll sales and dance parties, to bowling days and raffles. We’re not afraid to hustle and do the actual work,”she shared.

In order to tackle these fundraisers, the crew need a little more public momentum to light the fire under their wings, which is where the community comes in!

They are hoping for lovers of hip-hop to spread the word about their 2024 mission, with even higher hopes that sponsors for outfits and 3 dancers will come forth.

Their upcoming competitions will see Sublime dance their way to the pinnacle of events, starting with the Provincial Championships then Nationals and eventually, Worlds.

Let’s help this crew make South Africa shine in yet another category! You can support the dream here.
