Two musicians part of the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra are putting other talents to wonderful use as they tune in to swim the Robben Island Crossing in support of underprivileged musicians!
Cape Town, South Africa (20 October 2023) — Two kind-hearted musicians are tapping into a different kind of talent as they tune in to swim the iconic Robben Island Crossing to support underprivileged musicians. The pair are part of the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra which, as a body, has various outreach initiatives.
Zanelle Brits is a double bass musician while Louisa Theart plays the flute and piccolo. Together, they are set to tackle the crossing of fierce waters in November.
Their goal is to rally as many instruments as possible, inviting the broader Cape Town community and other musicians to donate any instruments (in good condition) for the music programmes that give budding musicians without resources, a chance.
Programmes like the CPO Youth Development for example, provide music education to over 300 young musicians from as young as six years old.
“The CPO reaches many underpriveleged children through our projects who go on to play in our youth ensembles and eventually the flaship Cape Town Philharmonic Youth Orchestra. Many young professionals and teachers have benefited from our projects,” shares CPO.
But, what’s even more touching about these musicians’ upcoming swim is the many extra miles Zanelle and Louisa are preparing to tackle, just to pay the way forward for future musos.
The Robben Island Crossing is legendary for a reason and has been widely celebrated for the flow of good intentions it has permitted over the years—from youngsters raising funds for aquatic friends in need, to champions of the crossing doing their part for vulnerable babies.
Anyone who has a spare instrument collecting dust can get in contact with the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra by emailing louise@cpo.org.za while any financial donations can be made possible through GivenGain, here.
