‘1 Kennel at a time’ has been making meals and distributing food to all the pets in Ocean View during the lockdown, the animals are incredibly grateful.
Cape Town, South Africa (08 May 2020) – If you are an animal lover that has been concerned about animals in poor communities, this is going to warm your whole heart and make you cry a little!
We are in tears seeing the beautiful images from ‘1 kennel at a time’. Before the lockdown, the organisation worked to empower pet owners of Ocean View. They educated the neighbourhood about the importance of providing proper shelter for animals as well as helping with food where needed.
Then the pandemic hit South Africa and the country went into lockdown. Many of the families in Ocean View already struggle so when they were forced to stay home, the animals were left to go with very little food.
‘1 kennel at a time’ stepped in to feed all the animals. The organisation travels in a bakkie and the back is filled with warm cooked food for the dogs as well as kibble for the cats. They head into the area twice a week to feed the animals.
“Twice a week we go out to feed the cats and dogs in Ocean View.
We do this so that we can see how the animals are doing and also to show our faces. People know who we are, which has allowed us to build a trustful relationship with the community. They will ask us for advice and when animals are sick we tell them to contact TEARS or the SPCA in Grassy Park. Both of them who normally have a mobile clinic in Ocean View are not able to do this during Lockdown.
We look after cats and dogs of people who are struggling and help them until they are back on their feet. Now with Lockdown there are a lot more people who have nothing to spare and their animals need our help. In some areas, we hand out wet food to make sure the animals get food. Ingrid will mix the pellets and rice to make it soft and easier to swallow for the hungry dogs. The dogs know the bakkie already and run towards us when they see us coming!”
