The SARZA team were applauded when disembarking their flight after it landed in George; they travelled from all over SA to lend a helping hand.
George, South Africa (14 May 2024) – Search and Rescue South Africa (SARZA) teams from around South Africa were flown to George to help with the tragic Victoria Street construction site collapse. Teams from the Cape, Gauteng, Mpumalanga and Free State were flown in by FlySafair to lend a helping hand. As some of the crew disembarked the flight, the passengers applauded them.
The tragic accident has shaken the George community to the core. Hundreds of emergency service providers have been on the scene to help find the men and women trapped within the construction site.
The SARZA team is comprised solely of volunteers who dedicate their time to helping people in need. They have been working on shifts around the clock since the incident.
“SARZA members have been circulating in and out of the rescue operation as some need to return to their respective work responsibilities, however two shifts of 10 members each, have been maintained throughout the rescue efforts.
All rescuers continue to work tirelessly towards a common goal in the challenging environment, removing layer after layer of concrete, as they cling onto the hope of finding more survivors.
Our SARZA team members all returned home, with the last flight landing safely and vehicle pulling into their driveway, on Sunday-evening.
Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of those affected, and those still involved in the rescue efforts.”
