A hero has emerged at Springhaven Primary School where a grade 3 pupil helped pull a friend from a burning taxi, saving his life.
Pietermaritzburg, South Africa (13 March 2024) – An incident took place on the 4th of March 2024 that would leave any parent trembling but thankfully, a hero emerged in the chaos and soothed all the worry away. Grade 3 pupil Likhanyile Duma saved school friend Aphelele Zondi from a burning taxi.
Springhaven Primary School shared news of the incident via their Facebook, hailing Likhanyile as a hero, for his fast-thinking actions and for saving Aphelele, who had been sleeping in the taxi, totally unaware that a fire had broken out.
The taxi had collected pupils from several schools in the area. Amongst learners from other schools, there were 4 learners from Springhaven. The taxi had turned onto Ramatha Road when flames started to engulf the vehicle.
“The taxi erupted in flames, the driver acted swiftly, urging the children to evacuate. Amidst the urgency, young Likhanyile Duma displayed remarkable composure.
Upon exiting the taxi, Likhanyile noticed a fellow learner still inside, seemingly unaware of the danger. Without hesitation, Likhanyile re-entered the blazing vehicle, waking up the sleeping student, and heroically carrying him to safety on his back.
The learner he saved, identified as Aphelele, owes his life to Likhanyile’s selfless and decisive actions. The entire Springhaven Primary School community commends Likhanyile Duma for his courage, quick thinking, and compassion in the face of adversity.
In a statement, the principal, Mr R. V. Moodley expressed their pride in Likhanyile, hailing him as Springhaven Primary’s “Little Hero.” The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of courage and compassion, even in the most challenging circumstances.
As the community rallies around the affected learners and their families, Likhanyile Duma’s story stands out as a shining example of heroism emerging from an unexpected crisis.” – Springhaven Primary School
