Cindy might not have hooves, but she certainly has the Rest Ur Ass Donkey Sanctuary’s hearts. After the tiny dog was found (struggling, and on three legs) by the donkey heroes champions, she was taken into their care where she will now get to live out her days with love!
Johannesburg, South Africa (27 August 2024) — Donkey heroes from the Ruimsig-based Rest Ur Ass Donkey Sanctuary had their hearts stolen recently, and not by one who brays.
When driving out of a township, members of the sanctuary team came across a heart-tugging sight—a tiny pooch struggling on three legs who’d soon take up an important space in their lives.
Cindy (as the dog would later be named) was spotted simply “trying to survive”. Described as having been hobbling in a fragile way—reminiscent of a bag of bones—the little dog in bad shape immediately called Lloreen Le Roux and her sister-in-law Yolanda, who also helps out at the sanctuary, to action.
After a little struggle, Yolanda managed to catch a frightened Cindy. A chat with the dog’s alleged owner gave the donkey heroes the go-ahead to take the pooch with them—the beginning of a better life for Cindy!
After a visit to vet Dr Michael, it was revealed that Cindy was fighting many battles, including neglect, a luxating patella in one of her legs, blindness and malnutrition. She received treatment for parasites and some eye drops and soon was on her way to her new home with Yolanda and her husband, Francois!
While Cindy might not be a typical member of the Rest Ur Ass family, her rescue is testament to the kindness and compassion that’s made the sanctuary what it is today.
Rest Ur Ass cares for numerous donkeys, many of whom have been abused or abandoned (you might remember them as the team who helped donkey Grace, who was rescued from Mpumalanga!). Since 2017, Lloreen, her husband Albert and their team have been taking in donkeys and offering them forever homes, helping them heal and flourish.
You can keep up with their work here, and support the sanctuary by ‘adopting’ a donkey (virtually); covering important costs for their care here.
