The festive season is twinkling closer and closer, which means it’s almost time for a community highlight in Cape Town—the festival lights switch on at the Grand Parade!
Cape Town, South Africa (27 October 2023) — As the festive season for 2023 twinkles its way closer and closer, Capetonians can start getting excited about the festive lights switch-on ceremony, which is only a few weeks away.
This will be the 54th addition for the City of Cape Town and sparkles as an event that attracts thousands of locals across the Metropole, of all ages. Set for 26 November and absolutely free, the official kickstart of all things festive and summer is a bright reminder of all there is to look forward to, come December.
Turning excitement up a notch this year, the City will also be providing festival goers with a glimpse into the future with a special new theme—’Cape Town: A Future of Hope’. This theme looks to meld the heritage of the city and natural environment with the promise of what a technologically empowered tomorrow can bring for the City—because what is the festive season if not the embodiment of hope?
“This year’s theme of ‘A Future of Hope’ encapsulates our vision for our city, and what every Capetonian wants for our country too,” said Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis.
With this theme in mind, the event will feature a youth performing arts competition which will see an energic line-up of gifted artists alongside other festival favourites.
After Mayor Hill-Lewis switches on the festive lights and calls the festive season and summer into full swing for Cape Town, a pyrotechnics display and spectacular light show will ignite the City Hall wall and a massive purpose-built tree of joy will be on full display.
“It’s been a long year for many, and the winter cold and rains have added another dimension to the challenges that many of us face. I, for one, am looking forward to the official start of summer, which is heralded by the switch-on of our festive lights,” shared Hill-Lewis.
Meanwhile in other Mother City events to get excited about, the Cape Town Arts Festival is also just around the corner and promises a wealth of creative riches, community and culture.
