In the face of Colon Cancer, gym instructor David Bogatsu has continued to inject positivity, strength and resilience into his classes. Now, his community are rallying to teach him a lesson in kindness as they raise funds for his treatment:

Johannesburg, South Africa (15 April 2024) — Over the years, many people have trusted David Bogatsu’s guidance to help them strengthen their bodies, minds and spirits on their fitness journeys. A beloved gym instructor well known in Highlands North and Greenstone in Joburg, David’s ethos, ability to show up even when facing the unfathomable and his passion have inspired so many who have signed up for his classes.

But what happens when the tables turn, and the people we look up to need to be able to look up to us?

Well, the Joburg community backing David are showing us exactly what happens, thanks to their decision to unite and support their teacher in the face of adversity in what has become a lesson all its own; a lesson in kindness.

David was diagnosed with Colon Cancer two years ago, which led to the installation of a Colostomy bag as Illana Demby, one of those David has inspired, informs Good Things Guy. However, this did not deter him from teaching his group gym classes.

“David has continued to teach during his gruelling chemotherapy treatments, displaying astonishing positivity and enthusiasm throughout. Despite the challenges, David’s determination has shone through, and his tests revealed a remarkable improvement,” Illana adds.

However, David’s determination and positivity alone are not enough to see him through. Due to the cost of treatments, he has not been able to continue chemo; hindering his recovery as a consequence. Currently at a crossroads of emotional and physical well-being, his state has the weekend to the point where he can’t always come to class.

“Other days, it is so obvious that in spite of feeling drained and frail, he puts on a brave face and still manages to give an incredible class,” says Ilana.

But, hope is on the timetable for David. After seeing his fighting spirit and struggle, a community of those he’s taught, helped and inspired have all come together to cover the costs of his treatment and raise funds for their instructor in a campaign called ‘Doing it for David’!

‘Doing it for David’ has already raised over half the amount needed to cover his medical costs (over R27 000 of R25 000), and with enough support, it could save David’s livelihood.
