A sanitary goodies drive led by the Humanity Foundation—in light of the recent International Women’s Month—has resulted in really good news for several homes caring for women who need all the extra love:

Johannesburg, South Africa (11 April 2024) — International Women’s Month has come and gone circa March, and with it, the refreshed need to do more for the women that make up the heart of our communities. While for many, days and months of recognition can seem like little more than inspiring words, for others, they are opportunities to make an impact, be the change needed, and times to spread more love to those who most need it. For the Humanity Foundation focused on Ekurhuleni communities, spreading extra love meant initiating a sanitary goodies drive—which we’re happy to report was a big success!

Thanks to community members, friends and fellow foundations, the Humanity Foundation was able to collect 3 180 individual sanitary products and toiletries. This resulted in 500 sanitary goodies packs that headed off to four homes for abused women and gender-based violence survivors and a children’s home that looks after four teenage girls.

These homes are spread across Ekurhuleni, specifically in Benoni, Boksburg, Kempton Park and Springs, as Pierre Marneweck tells Good Things Guy.

Why Sanitary Goodies?

It’s no secret that South Africa faces the pressing issue of period poverty across the country. While access to sanitary products should be a given, for many women, it is a struggle. In the case of survivors of assault and violence, doses of dignity can make a big difference as healing becomes all-important. Taking these factors into consideration, sharing simple items like sanitary goodies offers little acts of love that can remind someone in need of comfort that their larger community is looking out for them.

Special shoutouts from the Humanity Foundation go to Paula from Atlasville, the Curro Serengeti Outreach Program, every community member and business from Boksburg and Benoni who played their part and Colette Oosthuizen who packaged 100 bottles of body wash.

Here’s to more little acts of kindness that, in the sum of their parts, result in big moments of impact!
