Her Wings

As Hayley Jackson battles forward on one of life’s toughest paths (and inspires others to dig deep toward their own inner strength in challenges), a special update has seen Hayley receive her wings!

Cape Town, South Africa (03 April 2024) — Earlier this year, we shared the heart-tugging story of Hayley Carmen Jackson, a teen from Durban. At the tender age of 15-years-old, she was diagnosed with a mean battle—facing Ewing Sarcoma. But Hayley’s fight against bone-cell-impacting cancer has not come without moments of huge hope. And as of recent, a very special, small victory where she earned her wings.

After it became clear that Hayley and her family could not face the mountainous task of battling this type of cancer in isolation (emotionally or financially), her community made sure that they would not have to.

With a lion’s heart, an armour of resilience and an energy that has inspired so many to mine deep for inner strength and face our own battles with Hayley’s brand of bravery—it is obvious why so many have been eager to stand with her and root for her healing.

Her support page,‘Hearts for Hayley’, has love scattered across the page. Words of great support. And always, her smile which celebrates all the small victories—from being able to take a walk on the beach to completing chemo sessions. Hayley even opted to keep up with school when most would’ve understandably taken a break.

As such, her heart has inspired others to reach for their own. R140,000 has been raised to assist her treatment costs (there’s still a feat to go, and you can check out her campaign here). Surprises from organisations like Rainbows and Smiles have found her. And this week, Hayley’s flights to Cape Town for her big surgery were organised by Wings and Wishes.

Forget first class—Hayley got to sit right in the cockpit, earning her wings.

In the world of pilots, earning one’s wings is nothing short of a massive deal. It’s a symbol of commitment. Of pushing through all that it takes to wear the badge of honour. And of courage and responsibility.

Her route may be different, but Hayley’s wings embody many of the same sentiments. They are a reminder of how far courage can carry you. And, that maybe, in the words of Mel Robbins, you’ve been assigned this mountain to show others it can be moved.

We wish Hayley all the support in the world for her surgery later this week.
