Book Dash has just celebrated their biggest print run in its history, printing 600,000 books for children in need.

South Africa (21 May 2024) — Book Dash has celebrated many incredible milestones, like handing out 1 million books, and is now celebrating the biggest-ever print run of children’s books. They printed 600,000 books, many of which will be going towards charitable endeavours.

Research shows that every child should own and have access to storybooks to create a nation of lifelong readers and support literacy among youth. Yet books are expensive and often seen as a luxury, and owning just one storybook is out of the reach of millions of South African children.

Enter Book Dash – a literacy awareness organisation that creates and distributes storybooks to children in need.

Book Dash believes that every child should own 100 books by the age of 5 so to make that happen, they hand out free books to children, many in the very languages the children speak at home. Book Dash is a registered non-profit organisation with an innovative model for creating and sharing new, quality, and highly affordable South African children’s books. Over the past few years, more than 128 original storybooks, across eleven indigenous languages, have been created by volunteer creative teams at 12-hour events called Book Dashes.

The organisation relies on donations from some incredible sponsors so that children can access the books for free. Book Dash partners up with The Santa Shoebox Project each year and this year, they went above and beyond in that partnership.

“To add to the amazing news, Santa Shoebox Legacy has purchased 70,000 of these books, AND #BookDash has generously donated an additional 10,000 books. This means every single #SantaShoebox this year will contain at least one book!” – Santa Shoebox Project
