The Cape Town Arts Festival is just around the corner and set to celebrate the heart of the City: art of all kinds, culture and community! Here’s what to get excited about:
Cape Town, South Africa (26 October 2023) — The Cape Town Arts Festival (formerly known as the Cape Town Festival) is around the corner and all set to celebrate the heart of the Mother City—arts, culture and community!
The dazzling celebration will span two days, promising a creative immersion of artistic expressions by and for the community.
Think live music performances, poetry readings, engaging storytelling, live painting, art exhibitions, visual art installations, workshops, sculpting and wellness wonders (like Zumba and yoga sessions), and entrance is free.
And, for anyone wondering whether there will be food, don’t forget this is the foodie capital of South Africa we’re talking about, so look forward to food markets and local goodness.
Come Saturday, December 9, and Sunday, December 10, historical gem – the Castle of Good Hope – will play host to some of the most creative experiences of the year.
“The Cape Town Arts Festival stands as a testament to Community Arts for Community Wellbeing, with a mission to upskill, nurture and spotlight community artists within their own neighbourhoods, and recognise their exceptional contributions by showcasing them on the main festival stage — a meeting ground for emerging and established artists,” says Yusuf Ganief, Artivist and Festival CEO.
This year’s theme is SHiNE (Social Harmony through National Effort), a reflection of the festival’s partner, The South African Human Rights Commission.
Some musical acts are set to include Dee Koala, Afro Suns Marimba Band and Imad, with many more still to be announced.
In the world of storytellers, Fatime Dike will tell the rich history of the festival’s Castle setting in a narrated parade to add insightful context to the iconic venue.
As for poetry masters, Bulelwa Basse, founder of the Lyrical Base Project(who elevate the profiles of writers from marginalised communities), will be hosting a masterclass open to anyone and everyone.
But you won’t have to wait until the Cape Town Arts Festival to experience it, as a visual art exhibition will showcase 17 talented artists’ works in the coming weeks.
The Festival extends further beyond the main event with a series of innovative programmes that span three months, including Artists for Artists, Beyond busking and the Phillipi PESP Project—all designed to upskill community artists.
