Nosiviwe Matikinca’s thought-provoking art holds a powerful message about the systemic inequalities that persist in South African schools.
Pretoria, South Africa (04 September 2024) – Nosiviwe Matikinca’s highly anticipated solo exhibition, Ukungalingani Kwezemfundo (Educational Inequality), to be held at the Pretoria Art Museum, is a touching exploration into the struggles faced by learners from underprivileged backgrounds.
A familiar face to Good Things Guy, the talented Visual Arts graduate from Nelson Mandela University (NMU) won last year’s Sasol New Signatures Art Competition and has since cemented her reputation as an artist.
Nosiviwe’s acclaimed work in 2023 shed light on the overcrowded classrooms, broken furniture, and lack of basic necessities like school shoes that hinder these learners’ education.
According to NMU, her work of fragile clay castings of school shoes will now be featured with enhanced significance in the context of a solo exhibition.
For this solo show, Matikinca expanded her artistic exploration beyond ceramics to include printmaking and castings in various materials.
Conveying social issues through art
For Nosiviwe, the contemporary art movement provides a way to tackle and express one’s opinions and concerns about social issues.
Sharing about her unique and impressive artworks, Nosiviwe said:
“For my solo exhibition, I chose to continue the narrative from 2023, to raise awareness and educate the public about the struggles of learners from underprivileged backgrounds.
“My artwork reflects the overcrowded classrooms and the shortage of school tables, where students are forced to share or make do with broken tables. The carvings on these tables symbolise the distraction and struggle of the learners amid the overcrowding and noise.”
About Nosiviwe’s solo exhibit
Nosiviwe’s first solo exhibition will be held at the Pretoria Art Museum from 5 September to 3 November, alongside the Sasol New Signatures 2024 exhibition.
