The Little Optimist Trust has set a new challenge, encouraging people from across the globe to join in keeping hope afloat!

Cape Town, South Africa (22 October 2024) – A Cape Town charity’s annual fund-raising campaign is going global and attracting international attention, with an invitation to South Africa and the rest of the world to take up its new challenge.

For the past six years, The Little Optimist Trust has held a yearly boat sailing competition to raise funds for its various development projects. These include regular sailing therapy days and renovation projects at under-resourced children’s homes, schools and hospitals.

However, in a change to the traditional format, the charity is now expanding its fund-raising mission with the launch of The Great Optimist Challenge. The charity is inviting anyone living anywhere to take on a charity challenge of their choice between 15 October and 31 December 2024. Not only can participants raise money for The Little Optimist Trust, but they can also include any other charity of their choice – with prizes worth R50,000 on offer.

As part of the challenge, the annual Great Optimist Race will be held at the Boatica exhibition at the V&A Waterfront from 25 to 27 October. All child and adult visitors to the event can participate for free in boat racing (no sailing experience necessary) or SUP time trials at The Little Optimist stand. A small donation and a 15-minute time trial challenge will ensure entry for lucky draw prizes.

“We are inviting people to come to Boatica and take on a challenge by sitting in a boat, sailing, learning to sail, paddling a SUP, or just doing something funny and making a donation. All will be entered into The Great Optimist Challenge, standing a chance to win one of many prizes in our lucky draw worth R50 000,” says The Little Optimist founder Greg Bertish. 

For those unable to attend Boatica, there are endless ways to join the campaign.

A variety of groups and individuals from across the country have already signed up for The Great Optimist Challenge, including ten students from Pretoria University, an international team that will be riding the Wine to Whales bike ride, an in-store challenge at leading retailer Italtile, as well as children and families hosting mini-challenges and Optimist pool parties.

Charity Begins With Me’s children’s Christmas book drive is off to the most cheerful start, thanks to a kind author!

Johannesburg, South Africa (22 October 2024) — Just last week, we told our readers that Charity Begins With Me was on the hunt for 1,500 books as part of its children’s Christmas Book Drive. Today, we’re happy to report that support has already come their way jingling, largely thanks to the kindness of an author!

Stephan Ferreira shared the good news that shortly after posting about the book collection, he received a message from Reinette Lombard; an author of the Tippie Books!

Tippie is a character, elephant, and educator who helps children learn to read, supported by visual aids (cute illustrations) loved by teachers and students alike. For Charity Begins With Me, receiving boxes of Tippie books was not only perfect for one mission (making sure children in underprivileged communities have gifts to open) but also for helping their literacy journeys.

Considerately, the donated books are in the children’s home language.

The gesture facilitated by Reinette has certainly made this Christmas one for Charity Begins With Me to look forward to. But the call for more book donations is still loud!

Books will be collected until 30 November. Drop-offs can be made at Fairlands in Johannesburg, or books can be couriered via PostNet.

The dedicated inspectorate team of the Cape of Good Hope SPCA took on the 5km Sanlam Peace Run this past Saturday to raise critical funds in their relentless fight to protect those who cannot speak for themselves.

Cape Town, South Africa (21 October 2024) – On the crisp Saturday morning of 19 October, the Cape of Good Hope SPCA team of dedicated inspectors laced up their running shoes and took on the 5km Sanlam Peace Run.

With every stride, they carried the weight of countless animals who have suffered, those still waiting for rescue, and those who have found comfort in their care.

Led by Chief Inspector Jaco Pieterse, the team’s efforts were a powerful statement against animal cruelty.

Thanks to the incredible support of those who generously ploughed into the fundraising initiative, Cape of Good Hope SPCA was able to raise 50% of their R100,000 goal!

“This race was more than just a run. It was a statement—we will never stop fighting against animal cruelty.

“Your donations keep our inspectors on the road, rescuing animals from abuse and neglect. They provide medical care, food, shelter, and love to animals who have known nothing but pain,” the organisation said.

To all those who contributed, cheered and stood in solidarity with the runners in the fight against cruelty, the Cape of Good Hope SPCA thanks you!

“Thank you for being part of this journey. Together, we are unstoppable. Together, we are their voice.”

The 2025 Australian Firefighters Calendar is here, and it’s more than just sizzling photos – it’s a powerful force for change, pairing Australia’s bravest heroes with adorable animals to raise millions for life-saving causes across the globe.

Australia (21 October 2023) – The Australian Firefighters Calendar is back for 2025, and it’s bringing the heat once again! This year’s edition promises to be bigger, better, and cuter than ever, with a unique theme that pairs the country’s bravest heroes with some of the most adorable animals you’ve ever seen. From playful puppies to cuddly koalas, these firefighters are showing their softer side while supporting fantastic causes. It’s not just a calendar – it’s a celebration of courage, compassion, and community spirit.

For years, the Australian Firefighters Calendar has captured hearts across the world, and many of our Good Things Guy readers eagerly wait for the announcement of its release. Though we don’t get the calendars physically in South Africa, our annual article is the next best thing!

Since its launch in 1993, the Australian Firefighters Calendar has raised over $3.5 million for charities across Australia and beyond. And 2025 is no different – the calendar will continue supporting vital causes, from wildlife rescues to children fighting cancer. This year, the Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital is one of the proud recipients of the calendar’s charity donations, helping rescue and rehabilitate injured wildlife.

As Dr Bree Talbot, Head Wildlife Veterinary Surgeon at the Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital, beautifully puts it: “This generous support allows us to continue saving Australian wildlife and making a lasting difference.”

But it’s not just about the pictures – these firefighters have become global conservation ambassadors, using their fame to raise awareness for causes like the protection of Australian wildlife. The 2025 calendar editions feature over 25 firefighters from aviation, military, and urban fire services. Each month reveals heart-warming photos of these heroes with animals like koalas, kittens, and even horses.

There are five different editions this year, so there’s a calendar for every animal lover out there!

It’s almost time for dog lovers in Cape Town to enjoy a day in ‘pawradise’ as Woefie Wandel 2024 approaches to support the Cape of Good Hope SPCA! From walks with fellow dog lovers to an art station just for pooches, food stalls and even pet-friendly photo booths, here’s what’s on the cards:

Green Point, South Africa (20 October 2024) — If a day spent out at a park surrounded by dogs, greenery and fellow dog lovers is your idea of paradise (or should we say, pawradise), then the 2024 Woefie Wandel might just be the next thing you add to your social calendar with immediate effect.

On the one paw, the Woefie Wandel is a big fundraising opportunity for the Cape of Good Hope SPCA whose tireless work for the betterment of Cape animals makes a massive difference every week. On the other, it’s a wagging and wonderful way to connect with animal lovers while letting your dog enjoy a range of pooch-friendly activities!

On the cards for the day set to be hosted at the ever-tranquil Green Point Park are:

• Walkies—two walks, one 1.2km and a 1.9km
• Food Stalls—because what’s a walk without a treat to look forward to?
• Art for Pooches—Yes, your dog has the go-ahead to unleash its inner Pawcasso!
• A pet-friendly Photobooth
• Contests: There will be contests for the Best lookalike dog, the happiest dog and more
• A Pet Pop-up Shop
• A Mobile Clinic—Get those rabies vaccinations and microchipping out of the way on the day!
• A Mini Funfair—So that your human kids can also let their hair down

Last year, Woefie Wandel helped the Cape of Good Hope SPCA raise R50,000 thanks to 600 participants and the many, many four-legged friends present. And if those numbers are anything to go by, hopes are higher than your dog’s leap to catch a frisbee that 2024 will have a marvellous impact.

For 10 years, the Nuts & Bolts Rally has united petrolheads to put their wheels to the test for charity. In celebration of this decade-anniversary, drivers are making this year’s rally extra-epic, including ‘wild-child’ dad Tony Brand (a 77-year-young man on a mission), who hopes that he and his jalopy will make a huge difference.

South Africa (18 October 2024) — At 77-years-young, Nicci Brand’s ‘wild child’ of a dad, Tony, has embarked on a monumental road trip around South Africa as part of the ever-epic and charity-driven Nuts & Bolts Rally!

A rally for charity that’s been revving engines since 2014 as founded by Pieter Andersen, the Nuts &Bolts Rally’s mission was established both as a fundraising opportunity and as a metaphor for the experiences charities face.

Like time spent on long road trips where roads are often fierce, a charity’s journey is fledged with unpredictability, bumps, and countless moments wondering whether the fuel will see them through to the next pitstop. But, as anyone who has been on an epic road trip knows, so many of the challenges are evened out by good company—exactly what the friends of the Nuts & Bolts Rally hope to be to their selected charities.

Ballies, in their jalopies, have united time and time again to support worthy causes through their quirky wheels. This year, they’ve tackled various Rallies from April that have seen them take to the Garden Route, Northern Cape and the Western Cape.

But, for their decade anniversary, they’re tackling a biggie. It’s a mission brimming with adventure for the participants—golden-hearted petrolheads. Their hope, once all engines are off and the job is done, is that they each would’ve raised significant funds for four charities: the United Cerebral Palsy Association of South Africa, the Smile Foundation, CHOC and Goldilocks and The Bear Foundation (GB4ADHD). And they’re doing it through a road trip around South Africa!

Enter Tony Brand, AKA the Brandpa. The elder participant (and the only one who hasn’t faced mechanical issues, he might add), Tony, is driving his VW Kombi 6,450 km across South Africa to quite literally rally support for the aforementioned charities.

His hope is to raise R50,000 in sponsorships to support children facing a spectrum of challenges across our country.

Rally participants are booked to reach the end of their adventure at the end of the month, as Nicci shares, with Cape Town as their end-point. Here, their cheques will be handed over, and the making a difference part of the long drive can begin!

Matthew and Nicholas McGregor launched the Kesho Collective as a way to unite South Africans in London and raise funds for charity in SA.

London, United Kingdom (18 October 2024) – Nicholas McGregor and Matthew McGregor, cousins from South Africa now living in the United Kingdom, have found a great way to unite the South African community in London, while still supporting charitable causes in South Africa. The duo are creating meaningful impact through their non-profit Kesho Collective, which was founded earlier this year.

Living in the UK, the cousins realised they could harness the green and gold community and the Ubuntu that runs deep within every South African’s to give back to their selected charities the Mzansi’s Rugby Academy and the Rosey’s Crèche and Daycare.

Through the hosting of events, many themed around the exciting rugby games our Springboks play, Nicholas and Matthew are able to collect donations and raise funds from event proceeds that go directly to the charities. They have had great success so far, having hosted two sold-out events so far and a third on the card for November.

These events provide South Africans living in the UK with the chance to celebrate their culture, support their team, and give back to their home country. It’s a reminder that no matter how far away they are, South Africans can still come together to make a difference.

How It Works

Kesho Collective raises funds primarily through monthly donations and events. Their passion for South Africa is echoed in their love for the Springboks, and they have harnessed that enthusiasm to create a community of rugby-loving South Africans living in London. Through highly successful screening events for Springbok matches, they have brought people together, sold out venues, and raised substantial amounts for charity.

They have an upcoming event for the Springboks v England rugby game on the 16th of November 2024, should you be keen to join, you can find out more here. Note the funds for the event will go directly to the Mzansi’s Rugby Academy and Rosey’s Crèche.

The Mzansi’s Rugby Academy is based in Port Alfred and supports local children through rugby and education. The academy is run by Barry Scharneck and Alex Floyd-Douglas. They work with teens from the age of 13-18 by providing them with rugby training, transport to fixtures, and educational support. Soon, they will have a fully-fledge programme for women’s rugby too.

For the youth to take part in the academy, they need to show academic interest by keeping their grades up. This ensures that they get a balanced academic and sporting education.

“We’re incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved so far, particularly being able to fund and support a full rugby sevens festival for youth in the Eastern Cape with Mzansi’s Rugby Academy. It’s amazing to give these young athletes visibility on SuperSport Schools, and we truly believe in the power of sport to uplift communities and help South Africa reach its full potential.” – Matthew McGregor

Rosey Mbikwana, runs the Rosey’s Crèche and Daycare which is based in Mthatha. The daycare provides a safe space and meals for children while their parents are at work. Rosey’s ultimate goal is to offer these children better educational facilities.

Through the Kesho Collective, they are fundraising to build a new classroom for the crèche, with the hope of completing it for the new school year.

Siyabonga Mfana has worked with non-profit, the Cart Horse Protection Association, for the past six years. When Siya started running to work, the idea of using his strong legs for a better cause came about. Now, Siya is preparing to take on the Cape Town Marathon and the 2025 Comrades!

Cape Town, South Africa (18 October 2024) — Siyabonga Mfana is preparing to run his first marathon this Sunday as a build-up for his big mission: running the 2025 Comrades to support cart horses working on the Cape Flats!

Siya has worked with the non-profit organisation, the Cart Horse Protection Association (CHPA), for the past six years. Based in Cape Town, CHPA’s top focus is advocating for the welfare of working horses and donkeys, which they do in a myriad of practical ways, including education and training initiatives for owners, clinic services and veterinary care, monitoring the animals, as well as rescues and rehabilitation efforts.

For Siya, it only made sense to dedicate his first marathon to the animals he works with. Siya was already running from Delft to work in Epping to save on taxi fare (beyond himself, Siya is also paying for his sister’s education at culinary school), and so when CHPA team member Megan White asked him if he would consider running the Comrades with the animals they advocate for in mind, he took the opportunity on with open arms and steady legs!

But Siya first needs to test the waters of running a marathon, which he’ll tackle on Sunday as a participant in the Cape Town marathon.

Siya’s fundraiser is already going strong, having raised over 50% of its target already!

The funds will help support CHPA’s services for cart horse welfare while raising awareness for their important cause.

South Africa is uniting for one of our strongest warriors, Alison Botha, who recently underwent a brain aneurysm—The same Alison who survived the unsurvivable after two men brutally raped her and left her for dead with more wounds than doctors could count. Now, all those she has inspired are standing behind her as she climbs this medical mountain!

Cape Town, South Africa (17 October 2024) — Alison Botha’s story is one many South Africans have shed tears over, felt indescribable rage about, and become inspired by—often in one sitting. Now, as Alison faces a medical mountain, South Africa and people across the world are uniting to help her push onward and upward.

Alison is known across the world as someone who went from survivor to warrior. In 1994, she faced unimaginable horrors when one December night changed her life forever.

Two men abducted Alison and took her to the outskirts of Port Elizabeth. She was raped violently, stabbed over 30 times, and left with her throat slit from ear to ear in the bushes, where she was as good as dead.

Except, Alison didn’t die. With every last ounce of strength she had left, Alison dragged herself to the road where a passing car found her. When she eventually received medical help, she had so many wounds doctors could not count them.

Alison’s decision in that moment was to deny death and to continue pushing on day after day, not simply as a survivor, but as a source of immense strength for countless women.

No one would’ve blamed Alison for losing herself to trauma. But, she chose a new life; one where she would help so many other women become warriors instead by seeing the power of choice to triumph over life’s hardships.

Today, Alison is a champion for GBV victims. Her book, I Have a Life—Alison’s Journey became a best-seller and the epitome of courage. She inspired WomanInpowered—an initiative that helps women protect themselves and won the Rotarian Paul Harris Award for ‘Courage Beyond the Norm’ among many other accolades.

While she might be a formidable warrior, Alison is also a human. And right now, her body is in a terrible predicament.

As her collaborating ghostwriter, Marianne Thamm, explains per Daily Maverick, Alison endured an aneurysm in late September where bleeding on the brain ensued.

She underwent surgery to stop the haemorrhage in Cape Town and is currently in and out of consciousness. Today, she is scheduled to undergo brain surgery to help with the fluid that has built up.

But, as Lynette Oxley of Girls On Fire explains, Alison does not have the medical aid to cover all this.

As such, her legal team have stepped forward to help Alison climb this medical mountain via a trust fund, and the support has been significant!

People from all over the world and country have sent their support, love and contributions. Alison has touched so many lives, and now people are paying it forward to ensure this battle is one she won’t go through alone.

The Ride of a Lifeline fundraiser has successfully galloped to an impressive end, raising just under R50,000 to help support vulnerable and abandoned babies in the care of Breath of Life!

East London, South Africa (17 October 2024) — Last month, an initial disappointment turned into a heartfelt adventure that has ultimately made a significant difference for East London-based non-profit, Breath of Life.

Initiated by longtime supporter of the NPO, Nisha Varghese, who is no stranger to rallying support for worthy causes across a spectrum of fields, the original idea was for Nisha to take to horseback for a fair distance as part of the ‘Ride of a Lifeline’ effort that would support the vulnerable babies in Breath of Life’s care.

However, when Nisha learned that she wouldn’t be able to ride as part of her effort without a special saddle, given her Cerebral palsy, a brief moment of disappointment ensued.

That’s when Tom and Tori Horse and Heart—a horseback riding centre in Chinsta West—galloped to the rescue and decided to ride on Nisha’s behalf!

Tom and Tori, Horse and Heart riders, rode 22 km to Cefani and back to rally support for Breath of Life. As of this week, we now know that the support rallied was just under R50,000!

Nisha shares that Breath of Life has been sent a total of R47,943,30—funds to help them buy baby care supplies and cover their operating costs.

“There are no words in the dictionary to describe how grateful I am to each of you who showed up for my children,” Nisha said in a heartfelt thank you post.

Breath of Life will now have some financial peace of mind as they continue to provide a safe space for abandoned or abused babies until these little tots find their forever families.
