A sister’s selfless stem cell donation has given Amanda Busch, an oncology pharmacist and mother of two, a second chance at life, proving that love and hope can truly save lives.

Johannesburg, South Africa (22 October 2024) – In a heartwarming display of love, Amanda Busch, an oncology pharmacist and mother of two, found herself on the receiving end of a life-changing gift — a stem cell donation from her sister, which helped her beat leukaemia and enter remission.

Amanda’s story is not just one of survival but of community, hope, and the power of family bonds.

“On the day before Father’s Day in 2010, I was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukaemia when my general practitioner ran some tests after I sought treatment for referred shoulder pain,” Amanda shares.

As the oncology manager at Medipost Pharmacy, Amanda was no stranger to the medical world, but this time, she became the patient, relying on the very medications she once dispensed to others.

Amanda’s journey took a complicated turn when she fell pregnant unexpectedly, requiring her to pause her cancer treatment and switch to a pregnancy-safe medication. After her baby was born, the doctors advised that her best option for beating the cancer would be a bone marrow transplant. This marked the beginning of a long search for a donor match — a process that can take years.

“So many kind friends and members of the community came forward offering to be tested as bone marrow donors,” Amanda recalls.

But with the odds of finding a match outside of biological relatives standing at only one in 100,000, Amanda was beyond grateful when her sister emerged as an almost perfect candidate.

“I thank my lucky stars that I have an amazing sister who was so generous in her support and willingness to make this lifesaving stem cell donation to me.”

The process of stem cell donation is often simpler than many imagine, similar to donating blood, with donors taking medication to boost their stem cell production. This, combined with the growing need to diversify South Africa’s stem cell registry, highlights the importance of raising awareness. Amanda’s story is a shining example of what is possible when people come together in support of one another.

“Although the chance of being a match for a stranger in need of a lifesaving transfusion is small, there are children, mothers, and fathers praying to find a genetically similar tissue match from a donor who can give them the same chance at life I had,” Amanda says.

Her hope is that more South Africans will step forward to register as donors, knowing that they hold the power to give someone the gift of life.

Following the transplant, Amanda spent 16 days in isolation at the haematology unit of Netcare Pretoria East Hospital to protect against infection.

But despite the challenges, she reflects on her journey with gratitude: “Thankfully, in my case, the side effects were not too severe, and I began the path to recovery that has led me to still be in remission seven years later. I have so much to be grateful for.”

Rentia Myburgh, group sales and marketing director at Medipost Holdings, adds that awareness is crucial in saving lives: “We salute the haematologists and healthcare professionals, as well as all registered donors, for your contribution to saving the lives of people like our valued colleague Amanda.”

For those inspired by Amanda’s story, registering as a bone marrow donor is free and non-invasive. Visit https://sabmr.co.za/become-a-donor/ and https://www.dkms-africa.org/get-involved/become-a-donor to learn more about how you can become a potential lifesaver.

Amanda’s story ends on a note of pure positivity. After years of uncertainty, she is now living in remission, watching her children grow up, and feeling overwhelmingly thankful for the love, support, and medical expertise that brought her to this point.

Her message is simple yet profound: “The gift of life is yours to give.”

Australia (21 October 2023) – The Australian Firefighters Calendar is back for 2025, and it’s bringing the heat once again! This year’s edition promises to be bigger, better, and cuter than ever, with a unique theme that pairs the country’s bravest heroes with some of the most adorable animals you’ve ever seen. It’s not just a calendar – it’s a celebration of courage, compassion, and community spirit.

For years, the Australian Firefighters Calendar has captured hearts across the world, and many of our Good Things Guy readers eagerly wait for the announcement of its release. Though we don’t get the calendars physically in South Africa, our annual article is the next best thing!

Since its launch in 1993, the Australian Firefighters Calendar has raised over $3.5 million for charities across Australia and beyond. And 2025 is no different – the calendar will continue supporting vital causes, from wildlife rescues to children fighting cancer. This year, the Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital is one of the proud recipients of the calendar’s charity donations, helping rescue and rehabilitate injured wildlife.

As Dr Bree Talbot, Head Wildlife Veterinary Surgeon at the Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital, beautifully puts it: “This generous support allows us to continue saving Australian wildlife and making a lasting difference.”

But it’s not just about the pictures – these firefighters have become global conservation ambassadors, using their fame to raise awareness for causes like the protection of Australian wildlife. The 2025 calendar editions feature over 25 firefighters from aviation, military, and urban fire services. Each month reveals heart-warming photos of these heroes with animals like koalas, kittens, and even horses.

There are five different editions this year, so there’s a calendar for every animal lover out there!

With the 2025 Australian Firefighters Calendar, we get a feel-good mix of bravery, kindness, and a whole lot of cuteness. What more could you ask for? Grab a cup of tea, enjoy the pictures, and let’s celebrate these everyday heroes who are making the world a better place, one adorable moment at a time!

But Nicole’s success didn’t come overnight. She began her athletic journey as a high-performance gymnast before transitioning into weightlifting and CrossFit. It was here that she found her passion for powerlifting, falling in love with the Squat, Bench, and Deadlift. Her personal bests tell the story of her grit and determination: a 425kg total in the gym and 400kg in competition.

Africa has a new motorsport hero! Botswana’s Ross Branch has made history, becoming the first African rider to win the World Rally Raid Championship, a triumph that cements Africa’s place in the global motorsport arena.

Botswana (12 October 2024) – Africa has just gained a new champion in the world of motorsport, and it’s time to celebrate! Ross Branch, a proud son of Botswana, has made history by becoming the first rider from the continent to win the World Rally Raid Championship (W2RC).

This achievement isn’t just a personal triumph for Ross – it’s a moment of immense pride for the entire continent.

Ross, representing Hero Motosports Team Rally powered by Motul, has taken the rally world by storm, proving his unmatched talent and dedication. Known as “The Kalahari Ferrari,” Ross has spent a lifetime chasing adventure and pushing the limits. Now he stands as a world champion – an inspiration for riders everywhere, especially those from Africa.

Ross secured this incredible achievement on African soil, wrapping up the final stage of the Rallye du Maroc to become the 2024 W2RC Champion. After a fantastic season that began with a podium finish at the Dakar Rally earlier this year, Ross only needed to complete the final race to cement his legacy. His journey from second place at the Dakar to becoming the World Rally Raid Champion is one for the history books.

What makes this story even more remarkable is that although Ross isn’t South African, he hails from Southern Africa and Botswana is a neighbour to us (and a hop and a skip from Joburg)! That’s more than enough for us to claim him as our own! His grit and determination shine brightly, and his victory is a win for all of Africa.

From a young age, Ross has been no stranger to speed and adventure. He started racing at the tender age of four and has since become a force to be reckoned with in rally racing. With two Dakar stage wins, a World Championship win in Kazakhstan in 2021, and seven victories in his home event – the Botswana 1000 Desert Race – Ross’ career has been nothing short of extraordinary. Now, he adds the ultimate title to his list of achievements: World Rally Raid Champion.

Reflecting on his journey, Ross said, “It’s been an incredible season, and to end it with the championship title means the world to me. My team has been incredible, and the support from my fans across the world has kept me going. I’m proud to represent Africa on the global stage.”

This success hasn’t come without hard work. Ross’ dedication, combined with the reliability of his Hero 450 motorcycle and support from partners like Motul, has been key to his triumph. His passion for rally racing, along with the backing of the Hero Motosports Team, has paved the way for this momentous win. The team, based in Jaipur, India, has been competing since 2016 and is the first Indian team to achieve a podium finish at the Dakar Rally. Now, with Ross’ victory, they’ve brought even more global attention to the sport.

Ross’s incredible journey reminds us that dreams have no boundaries. Africa is proud to have its first World Rally Raid Champion, and his success is a reminder of the potential and talent that exists on our continent.

Here’s to celebrating Ross and his historic achievement – proving that no matter where you’re from, you can conquer the world!

Ambulances get the sick and injured to hospitals across South Africa; Kids Flight is an air ambulance that helps children in the poorest communities!

South Africa (10 October 2024) – Medical aviation is the fastest way to get injured and sick people to the hospital in the quickest way possible. Air ambulances can be very expensive, but they are lifesaving in the worst cases. Kids Flight is a South African NPC and PBO that caters to children who cannot afford this service.

Many children are at the mercy of long waiting times, dilapidated road infrastructure, vast distances and the inaccessibility to specialist medical care. Kids Flight makes sure these children have access to an air ambulance.

“Simply put, the majority of South African children live in poor households and in rural settlements. These two factors contribute to limited access to both emergency care and ongoing specialist care, which in turn contributes to higher death rates in children.”

The ICU-equipped helicopter, staffed with world-class aeromedical teams and equipped and designed with child-specific resources, has the real capability of getting the right people and resources to the right little patient at the right time. The charitable service is operated by Rocket Hems and Henley Air.

“The main object of the Company is to provide and/or facilitate Helicopter Emergency Flights to children up to the age of 12 years. The Helicopter Emergency Flights will be provided in the case of time-critical conditions warranting, based on industry-standard emergency flight criteria, the activation of an appropriately equipped, staffed and registered emergency helicopter to provide life-saving medical care and stabilisation as well as the air transport of the relevant child to an appropriate hospital. Inter-hospital transfers of children meeting the requirements will also be included.”

The helicopter is beautifully covered in children’s drawings. It highlights just who this fantastic service is catered to.

If you would like to support this service, you can find out more via the website here or Facebook here.

The kindness of strangers! A woman is rallying South African social media to help find a good samaritan who saved her life ten years ago.

Johannesburg, South Africa (10 October 2024) –  It can be very easy to forget how deeply connected we all are but every once in a while, something happens that reminds us of our shared humanity and the profound impact one person’s kindness can have on another. These moments bring ubuntu, our South African spirit of togetherness, to life in the most beautiful ways.

This is the story of Lisa Dyboll and how a stranger’s compassion may have saved her life.

In August 2014, Lisa was grappling with overwhelming grief. Just weeks before, she had experienced the heartbreaking loss of her twin girls in a miscarriage, shortly after the unexpected death of her father. The weight of sorrow was immense and heavy, and although she felt unwell, she attributed it to the emotional strain she was enduring.

That day, Lisa had been dropped off at the Nicolway Shopping Centre (now Winifred Mandela Precinct) by a friend. She planned to do a bit of window shopping before her husband would pick her up for a doctor’s appointment later. However, as she walked through the parking area, she suddenly felt dizzy. Before she knew it, she collapsed on the pavement.

Her breath became shallow, and everything around her blurred.

At that moment, fate intervened in the form of a stranger driving an older model gold Mercedes Benz. Lisa recalls seeing a young man with dreadlocks rushing to her aid. He didn’t hesitate. Kneeling beside her, he helped her sit up and began talking to her, gently coaxing her back into consciousness. Despite her confusion, she remembers him insisting on helping her into his car, where a young girl, possibly his daughter, sat in the back seat. While Lisa initially resisted his suggestion to take her to Sandton Mediclinic, the man respected her wishes and drove her to The Campus, where her husband worked. Along the way, he even stopped at a garage to buy her a Coke, thinking she might be experiencing a diabetic episode. The kind stranger safely delivered her to her husband, who then rushed her to the Mediclinic.

Once at the hospital, it was discovered that Lisa had multiple blood clots in her lungs. Doctors immediately rushed her into the ICU, explaining that she was fortunate not to have had a stroke and that the timing of her arrival was critical.

Without the intervention of this caring man, the outcome could have been far more tragic.

Nearly a decade has passed since that life-saving encounter, but Lisa has never forgotten the kindness of the Good Samaritan who stopped to help her when she was at her most vulnerable. She often wonders if he remembers that day as vividly as she does. She’s tried different means over the years to try to find him, but she’s decided to cast that net further and asked Good Things Guy if our readers could assist in helping her track him down so she can thank him properly.

“I wanted to ask if you could help me track down my Good Samaritan who helped me out in a really tricky situation and who saved my life that day,” Lisa wrote to us. “It’s a long shot, but us Saffas are used to defying the odds.”

Here at Good Things Guy, we believe in the power of community and the strength of the human spirit. So, we’re asking our readers to help.

If anyone knows of a man who might live or work in the Fourways/Bryanston area, who drove an older gold Mercedes Benz in 2014 and has ever retold a story about a woman he helped at Nicolway (now Winifred Mandela Precinct), please reach out to us. Lisa would love to reconnect with the stranger who gave her the greatest gift – his kindness… and her life.

Stories like these remind us of the ripple effect a single act of compassion can create. And if there’s one thing we know for sure, it’s that when we come together, incredible things can happen.

Let’s help Lisa find her hero and celebrate the beauty of Ubuntu, alive and well in all of us.

Johannesburg, South Africa (08 October 2024) – Many may feel vulnerable and powerless, but one organisation is shaking things up, empowering South Africans to realise just how strong they truly are – both mentally and physically. Get ready, because Inpowered is gearing up for its most significant event yet, and it’s set to make history on the 21st of November 2024!

Founded by Mark Grobbelaar, Inpowered has made it its mission to teach life-saving self-defence skills, instil confidence, and empower participants to reclaim control of their lives. This powerful organisation runs courses designed to help people – from school children to CEOs – understand the true power they hold within. But it’s not just about the training; it’s about showing participants what they are truly capable of, and what better way to do that than breaking a wooden board at the end of the course? It’s a moment of triumph, a visual reminder of the strength that lies within.

On 21st November 2024, Inpowered is taking this empowering tradition to the next level with its most ambitious event to date – a world record attempt! The goal? To break the record for the most wooden boards broken in a single day. It’s a bold endeavour that will make the history books and also leave thousands of South Africans feeling more powerful than ever.

“I believe that every single person has the ability to stand up for themselves, no matter the circumstances,” says Mark Grobbelaar, founder of Inpowered.

“We’re not just teaching self-defence. We’re showing people how strong they truly are.”

Mark’s story with Inpowered starts decades ago, back in 1990, when he was travelling through London. That’s where he first met Alison – a chance encounter that would later spark a global movement. But at that time, life took them in different directions. When Mark returned to South Africa, they had lost contact, and the days before the internet meant that he had no way to find her. Fast forward to 18th December 1994, Alison was abducted, raped, and left for dead in one of the most horrifying attacks the country had ever seen.

Against all odds, she survived, and it was that will to live that became the foundation for Inpowered.

Mark and Alison reconnected in April 2000 after he read about her ordeal in You magazine. As a fifth dan in Karate, Mark had been contemplating the subject of self-defence for a long time, and after hearing Alison’s story in detail, he realised that many of her decisions had been based on not knowing better. Inspired, he wrote his thesis, Girl Power – Self Defence for Women, which would later evolve into the foundation for Inpowered.

When Alison read his thesis, she made a statement that changed everything: “Had I known this, my ordeal would never have happened.”

In 2012, Mark left corporate life to start Woman INpowered (WIP) full-time. He had one goal: to empower women by sharing self-defence techniques that truly work. In 2016, Mark realised that men, too, needed similar empowerment, and that’s when Guy Responsibly INpowered (GRIP) was born. These two programmes came together under the umbrella of Inpowered, and the organisation now works with people all around the world, from factory workers to Miss Universe.

We’re thrilled to announce that Mark joined us on the Good Things Guy podcast to share more about his journey, the upcoming record-breaking event and the incredible impact Inpowered is having on communities everywhere.

You can listen to that interview here:

If there’s one thing this story shows, it’s that strength isn’t always about physical power – it’s about resilience, determination, and the will to rise above. Mark Grobbelaar and his team are inspiring thousands to realise their true potential.

So, get ready, South Africa – history is about to be made, and lives are about to be changed!

Rocky Peak Spur in Alberton is not just serving meals, it’s serving up opportunities—offering special needs learners the chance to gain valuable job experience and life skills, proving that inclusivity isn’t just a goal, it’s a commitment.

Johannesburg, South Africa (08 October) – It’s often said that society’s true strength lies in how it treats those who are the most vulnerable. Mahatma Gandhi once reflected on this idea, reminding us that “The true measure of any society can be found in how it treats its most vulnerable members.” It’s not just a matter of philosophy but a call to action for communities and businesses alike to make a real difference where it counts most. For individuals with special needs, opportunities for personal and professional growth are not always readily available. Yet, these individuals deserve the chance to thrive, just like everyone else.

Enter Optim-Ed Learning Centre, a place of opportunity nestled in the heart of Alberton, South Africa.

Optim-Ed is not just a school but a place where children and young adults with special needs are equipped with skills to navigate life beyond the classroom. Through dedicated teaching and specialised programs, Optim-Ed works tirelessly to ensure that every learner reaches their full potential. But sometimes, that potential needs a little help from the community to truly flourish.

This is where Rocky Peak Spur in Brackenhurst, Alberton, stepped up in the most remarkable way. Recognising the importance of job experience for the older learners at Optim-Ed, Rocky Peak Spur has opened its doors to give them a valuable opportunity to learn, grow, and gain confidence in the workplace.

Bonny Botha, co-owner and principal of Optim-Ed Learning Centre, reached out to share this heartwarming story with Good Things Guy, who is eager to express her gratitude.

“I just want to give a huge shout-out to Rocky Peak Spur in Brackenhurst Alberton,” she said.

“We are a special needs school, and we try to give our older learners job experience and teach them important life skills. As you can imagine, approaching companies to accommodate our learners is a huge task, and they often are not keen. Rocky Peak Spur has allowed our learners the opportunity to job shadow at their restaurant every Friday morning. They even went as far as to make them shirts so that they feel part of the team. This is true inclusivity, and I feel that they need all the praise and attention they can get.”

It’s not just about the opportunity to job shadow but how Rocky Peak Spur has embraced these young adults as part of its team. The learners don’t just walk into a restaurant—they walk into a community that values and supports them.

This act of kindness from Rocky Peak Spur speaks volumes about the power of inclusivity and the willingness of businesses to play a positive role in the lives of those with special needs. It’s about more than just giving back—it’s about investing in a future where everyone has a chance to succeed, no matter their circumstances.

When communities come together, magic happens. Thank you, Rocky Peak Spur, for showing us all that when inclusivity is embraced, everyone wins!

South Africa’s youth never cease to amaze, and 13-year-old James Capstick-Dale is proving that brilliance knows no age limit—delivering yet another powerful speech six years after his viral debut, inspiring a new generation of leaders.

Western Cape, South Africa (07 October 2024) – South Africa is known for its talent. From arts and culture to leadership and sports, we’ve seen young people rise to incredible heights, making a lasting impact in their communities and beyond.

And, once again, one remarkable young individual is proving that greatness can start at any age.

In 2018, the Good Things Guy proudly featured seven-year-old James Capstick-Dale, who blew us all away with his speech at the prestigious Kerry Capstick-Dale Student Leadership Awards. This moment went viral, capturing the hearts of many as a young boy delivered words filled with insight, maturity, and poise well beyond his years.

The Kerry Capstick-Dale Student Leadership Awards, hosted by the University of Cape Town (UCT), are named in memory of Tamra’s late husband, who was himself a student leader at UCT. These awards are deliberately focused on rewarding and encouraging student leaders who – by virtue of the time they commit to the university community outside the lecture theatre – enrich the life of UCT. They seek to reward students who, through exceptional leadership qualities in student affairs, have shown dedication to the University of Cape Town and have advanced the ideals of the university’s Mission Statement. Such students must display an enlightened approach to life, generosity of spirit, humour and integrity.

The 2018 event was remarkable not only because of the incredible student leaders recognised but also because of James’ unforgettable speech.

Now, six years later, James, at the age of 13, has once again taken to the same stage to deliver another thought-provoking and powerful address. On the 3rd of October 2024, James stood before an esteemed audience, introduced by his younger brother Alexandre (8). This time, he was not speaking as a young man but as someone with a growing legacy of his own.

When asked about the experience, James said, “This was a huge honour for me and although I was a bit nervous at the beginning, I was pleased that I didn’t make too many mistakes. My mum has taught me how to speak in public from an early age, so the first public speech I gave I was six, which I gave on Winston Churchill. The UCT Student Leadership Awards are a prestigious event and I was very pleased to be given the opportunity to speak again. I’ve learnt to speak with practised emphasis and modulation where it’s appropriate and to maintain eye contact with the audience. I was so grateful that so many people came up to me afterwards to congratulate me.”

The essence of his speech? Leadership—what it truly means to lead, especially in a world that often feels divided and polarised. He opened by reflecting on the lessons of historical figures like Marcus Aurelius, the philosopher-king.

“A true leader remains centred, able to navigate chaos with composure. By mastering our thoughts and reactions, we can inspire those around us, fostering an environment of trust and resilience.”

James didn’t stop there. His words wove together the wisdom of other great minds such as Voltaire, who famously said, “It is dangerous to be right in matters where established men are wrong.”

James used this quote to highlight the courage required of leaders to stand firm in their convictions, even when it’s difficult. But his message wasn’t about strength alone; he emphasised the importance of empathy, kindness, and collaboration, qualities that true leadership demands.

His mother, Tamra Capstick-Dale, was understandably proud of both James and Alexandre, who introduced his older brother.

Reflecting on her son’s achievements, Tamra shared, “Jamie did extremely well. He is wise beyond his years, and even though he has only just turned 13, he has a presence for someone so young. I was also proud of his younger brother, Alexandre, who introduced him at the event. All my children have been taught the importance of family and of the values of honour and legacy from a very early age.”

James continues to grow in his leadership and academic journey. He attends the International French School in Cape Town, where he is bilingual, speaking both French and English fluently. He also takes Spanish and Latin with the help of a tutor. Additionally, James works with a critical thinking tutor, further sharpening his ability to engage with complex ideas—a skill that was fully displayed during his recent speech.

The event, hosted by UCT’s Vice-Chancellor, celebrated the talented students who received this year’s Kerry Capstick-Dale Student Leadership Awards: Catherine Dunn, Ubuntu Hlatshwayo, and Naledi Mohale—three outstanding young leaders who are sure to leave their mark.

James concluded his speech with a message of hope and inspiration, quoting one of South Africa’s great leaders, Shaka, who said, “Umuzi uyakhuliswa ngamabutho” or “A village grows because of its warriors.”

This powerful quote echoed the spirit of the evening—one that celebrated the strength, unity, and potential of South Africa’s young people. James urged the audience to lead with self-mastery, empathy, courage, and vision. His words left no doubt that leadership is not about power but about service, a message that resonated deeply with everyone present.

With his impressive academic achievements, leadership abilities, and remarkable oratory skills, James is indeed a rising star. He is a shining example of what the future of South Africa holds—brilliance, resilience, and hope. And while his story is already incredible, something tells us this is just the beginning for James.

We can’t wait to see what he does next.

South African powerhouses Professors Salim and Quarraisha Abdool Karim have been honoured with the prestigious Lasker~Bloomberg Public Service Award for their groundbreaking work in HIV prevention, proving once again that South Africans are changing the world for the better.

Global (03 October 2024) – South Africans continue to shine on the world stage, making remarkable strides across various fields – from science to public health, innovation to education. This spirit of perseverance and excellence is evident in the latest recognition of two of South Africa’s most dedicated champions of health and science: Professor Salim S. Abdool Karim and his wife, Professor Quarraisha Abdool Karim.

Together, they’ve just been honoured with the 2024 Lasker~Bloomberg Public Service Award, a significant recognition in the world of public health.

The Lasker~Bloomberg Public Service Award is no ordinary accolade. Often referred to as the “American Nobel,” it honours individuals whose work has had an extraordinary impact on the health of the public. The 2024 award was granted to the Abdool Karims for their groundbreaking work in HIV prevention and treatment, recognising the life-saving interventions they have introduced, particularly within the context of heterosexual HIV transmission.

Their efforts have transformed the landscape of public health in South Africa and have also rippled across the globe, influencing AIDS programs and public health policies worldwide.

“In accepting this Lasker award, we are recognising the power of global solidarity for global impact, which has been deeply imbued in our work on HIV prevention and treatment over the past 35 years. While we provided the initial evidence that antiretrovirals prevent sexual HIV transmission as PrEP, today PrEP is used in over 100 countries. If a patient with HIV and Tuberculosis co-infection anywhere in the world, including here in the US, is being treated according to WHO or CDC guidelines, that patient’s treatment is based on research conducted in South Africa by a multi-country CAPRISA team,” Salim S. Abdool Karim said in his acceptance speech.

“In a world wracked by division, conflict and anti-immigration hatred, this award is a sober reminder of how science reminds us of our shared humanity across the globe. We stand here today because of the power of global solidarity and partnerships in science that have saved tens of thousands of lives and helped make the world a better place for generations to come.”

The story of Quarraisha and Salim Abdool Karim is one of resilience and passion. Growing up under the harsh realities of apartheid, they experienced firsthand how discrimination and societal inequities can destroy opportunities for health and education. Despite these challenges, they persevered, driven by a deep-seated belief that science has the power to change lives.

“Our lived experience of growing up in apartheid South Africa, has had a profound effect on how we see our role as scientists. As young anti-apartheid activists involved the daily struggle for freedom, human rights and justice, we know the importance of human dignity and inclusiveness in all facets of life including in our scientific endeavours. We also benefited from the wisdom and guidance of several mentors who were both great scientists and deeply committed anti-apartheid activists. We remain eternally grateful to them for their guidance and advice, which reinforced for us the notion that science in service of humanity and social justice are two sides of the same coin. In particular, we are grateful to President Nelson Mandela who shaped our perspective on the role of scientists in serving society, as he eloquently outlined in the Foreword he wrote in our book on AIDS.,” says Quarraisha Abdool Karim.

Their work has always been about more than scientific advancement. For years, they have championed policies that go beyond the laboratory, working to make sure that those who are most vulnerable to HIV have access to the life-saving treatments and preventative measures they need. This holistic approach has saved countless lives and also helped build South Africa’s scientific capacity. In many ways, the Abdool Karims have been essential in positioning the country as a leader in global health.

Their combined efforts are not just South Africa’s pride but a global inspiration. Through their work, millions of people have received the care they deserve, and through their advocacy, public health systems worldwide have been strengthened.

Quarraisha Abdool Karim, in reflecting on the future, said, “We are in a tumultuous moment globally—a time when science is needed more than ever to tackle several of the world’s most complex challenges—pandemics, climate change, man-made famines in the midst of conflicts and widening inequalities within and between countries. Our hope lies in the ubiquity of science, on it transcending political and cultural barriers as the universal language to build bridges between the peoples of this world. Our interconnectedness and shared vulnerabilities underscore the importance of working together as scientists in service of humanity to generate knowledge and innovations to make the world a better place for everyone.”

Moments like these remind us just how powerful South African contributions can be on the world stage.

As South Africans, we can be proud knowing that our country is home to such influential figures who are reshaping global health for the better. The future is bright, and the impact of the Abdool Karims’ work will continue to resonate for generations to come.
