As summer approaches, the risk of encountering snakes increases, making it an ideal time to learn more about these fascinating reptiles at SAAMBR’s Snake Awareness Mini-Exhibition.

Durban, South Africa (21 October 2024) – Covered in scales with hair-raising patterns and colours, snakes are often misunderstood and feared creatures.

Seeking to reveal the beauty and marvels of these sneaky serpents this summer (read snake season), is the South African Association for Marine Biological Research (SAAMBR). A team of experts will offer a unique opportunity to delve into the world of these reptiles.

Whether you’re a snake enthusiast or looking to conquer fear, the SAAMBR will be hosting a free Snake Awareness Mini-Exhibition outside Dangerous Creatures in the uShaka Village Walk from Friday, 25th to Sunday, 27th October, between 9 am and 4 pm.

Contrary to the wide-held fear, snakes are flight animals, which means their first response when encountering humans is to flee from danger and not to stay and defend themselves. While there are 130 different species of snakes in South Africa, less than 10% of them are venomous.

“The event will focus on indigenous snakes encountered throughout South Africa, highlighting the important role snakes play in our lives.

“By being able to identify some of the more commonly encountered snakes, you will hopefully feel more confident when you come across a snake in your garden or whilst walking on a nature trail,” SAAMBR explained.

As summer approaches, snakes become more active, and you are more likely to see snakes in summer than in the colder winter months.

So, this may just be the ideal time to familiarise yourself with these creatures from the experts who know and understand them best.

A Cape Vulture who was released back into the wild in 2021 is still trackable and has been on quite the quest across the country; giving the team who helped him to freedom, a magnificent insight as to life after release!

Eastern Cape, South Africa (18 October 2024) — One of the most exciting experiences for conservationists is getting to see where animals adventure off to after they are released. Thanks to technology, many released animals are trackable, allowing those who cared for them in rehabilitation to keep up with them until their tracking devices no longer transmit signals.

Thanks to tracking technology, the team at VulPro have been able to follow one of the oldest captive-bred birds that they’ve worked with, a vulture named ‘Grey Black 04’, who has been on quite a quest over the years!

‘Grey Black 04’ was born at the National Zoological Gardens in Pretoria in 2018. Its release came in 2021 at Rookwood in the Eastern Cape thanks to VulPro (the only vulture conservation organisation of its kind) where a new life of exploring, foraging and taking to the skies ensued.

Since then, Grey Black 04 has travelled all over the country and even into Namibia. For the team, Grey Black 04’s adventures are particularly special as this vulture is their longest-tracked bird.

Currently, GreyBlack 04 has been enjoying the Eastern Cape near Komani where it is said to be looking to join a breeding colony!

“Grey Black 04’s journey highlights the success of collaborative conservation, showing how rehabilitation, captive breeding, and release programmes bring us closer to a future where vultures thrive in the wild,” the VulPro team said.

Beyond the thrill of being able to see how far a vulture’s wings take them, being trackable is also essential for future research as it helps conservationists learn more about the animal’s patterns, behaviours and movements.

Other wildlife champions who deal with different species also track their animals, like the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation, which always gives us a dose of good news when they share where their turtles’ travels have taken them.

From pet food donations to monetary contributions, the Kloof and Highway SPCA has been overwhelmed by the generosity of the community which has made their invaluable work possible.

Kloof, South Africa (17 October 2024) – With a heart filled with thanksgiving, the Kloof and Highway SPCA recently took to social media to thank its selfless supporters for continuously pouring into their cup.

The animal rescue recently acknowledged and thanked everyone who generously donates to their worthy cause which serves as a lifeline to countless animals in need.

“Often those who donate and help the most never ask for a ‘thank you’. We want you to know how much we appreciate your support always,” the organisation said.

The SPCA’s staff and volunteers have also been working tirelessly to spruce up the space and tea garden, creating a haven for animals, a place where they can find love, care, and a second chance at life.

“Our dog walkers have ensured that our goats have an enrichment area, and some volunteers helped do a garden in our Village Green.

“We have also had some wonderful students come and do community service and help us too. Donated plants are sold in our nursery, and your unwanted donated goods keep our charity shops stocked.”

Whether it be through donating unwanted household goods, pet food, volunteering or monetary donations, none of these developments would be possible without the generosity and kindness of animal lovers who don’t think twice about supporting the incredible work of assisting vulnerable animals.

To learn more about how you can support the Kloof and Highway SPCA call 031 764 1212.

South African conservationist Paul Gardiner’s new series ‘Natural Born Runners’ is set to take us on something of a conservation ‘marathon’ across the world! Paul is running all over the world’s last wilderness areas to meet wildlife heroes near and far:

Global (15 October 2024) — Conservationist and eco-tourism expert Paul Gardiner is taking us all on the run of multiple lifetimes thanks to his new series, ‘Natural Born Runners’.

Set to launch during the COP16 summit (AKA, the most important biodiversity event that unites eco-leaders across the world), ‘Natural Born Runners’ is set to take us all on a conservation adventure into and through some of the last wilderness areas in the world focused on the theme ‘Peace with Nature’ in line with COP16.

From icy terrains to open grasslands, Paul’s running shoes will take him across the world in a massive effort to learn about what conservationists are getting up to in their effort to prolong species’ environments and lifetimes.

A deep-rooted passion, Paul was born into a family for whom conservation efforts like rewilding were a labour of love. His father was a visionary who transformed Shamwari Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape into one of the world’s leading conservation success stories; helping reintroduce lions, rhinos and elephants back into their natural habitat.

As such, Paul begins his trek in the Eastern Cape; retracing these efforts. From there, he ventures to Scotland’s Alladale Wilderness Reserve all the way to North America to learn of the inspiring restoration of the American bison there.

‘Natural Born Runners’ will also see him participate in Run Richmond 16.19—a race founded by Oscar-nominated actor and activist Djimon Hounsou (Amistad, Gladiator).

Along for the ride is Paul’s cameraman and aspiring wildlife filmmaker Christian Antoine, who makes up for what he lacks in endurance running through comedy and edutainment.

The series is set to be launched on YouTube as a way to connect with the next generation of nature’s guardians—young people.

“We need to inspire the youth to take ownership of the planet’s future, and YouTube is where they engage,” says Paul.

“If we’re going to make peace with nature, the next generation needs to be at the forefront.”

South Africa, it’s time to #ChangeOneThing! By signing the “Save the Last of South Africa’s Rhinos” petition, you can show your solidarity and amplify the call for stronger protection measures for our beloved rhinos.

Johannesburg, South Africa (15 October 2024) – Far too many precious rhinos have suffered at the hands of heartless and greedy poachers, robbing our wildlife of their basic right to life and putting them at threat of extinction.

But, now is the time for your voice to be heard and join the fight to safeguard these iconic animals for generations to come.

Jamie Joseph from Saving the Wild, in collaboration with the Jane Goodall Institute’s Roots and Shoots South Africa, is dedicated to introducing legislation in South Africa that will protect rhinos and other wildlife from poaching.

By introducing stricter legislation, the organisations aim to create a safer haven for rhinos and other wildlife. They are calling upon South Africans to join forces and demand change.

“As it stands, there is no strict legislation to protect our rhinos from dangerous poaching practices,” says Kayla Hovelmeier, a Jane Goodall Institute’s Roots and Shoots South Africa volunteer.

Jamie Joseph will be taking the lead and heading to parliament to present a comprehensive proposal to the Minister of Forestries, Fisheries, and Environment.

However, the success of this endeavour depends on the unwavering support of the public. The only way parliament will see that this is important is by seeing that real South Africans are passionate about this change and protecting rhinos.

“Most rhino poaching cases do not get to trial, and if there is a conviction, it is either a fine or a prison term of less than five years that almost never gets served in its entirety,” Jamie explains.

For this very reason, the great public is being encouraged to sign the Save the Last of South Africa’s Rhinos petition and add their names so that the Minister can see how many people are demanding the protection of our rhinos and wildlife.

The goal is to reach at least 10,000 signatures for #RhinoLaws before Jamie goes into parliament.

To be a part of the solution and ensure that rhinos can roam the wild free of the threat of poaching, add your name to the petition at https://www.change.org/p/save-the-last-of-south-africa-s-rhinos-with-legislation

After suffering a nasty kick from a zebra, a tiny injured Nyala calf named Rimmy was welcomed to the Friends of Free Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, where he began his journey of recovery with much care and attention.

Midrand, South Africa (14 October 2024)Friends of Free Wildlife recently welcomed their first and most adorable antelope patient, with big ears, dark eyes, and endearingly long, wobbly legs.

The team of wildlife heroes was thrilled to welcome a beautiful male Nyala calf, named “Rimmy”, to occupy one of the stalls in the facility’s brand-new mammal enclosure.

According to the wildlife rehabilitation centre, Rimmy started life off on the wrong foot when he was kicked by a zebra at the lodge where he was born.

He unfortunately sustained a fracture to the radius on his left front leg and was meticulously treated by Dr Jean at Bryanston Avian, Exotic and Small Animal Clinic (BAESAC).

The dedicated team at Friends of Free Wildlife, along with the expertise of veterinarians at Onderstepoort Wildlife Clinic, worked tirelessly to mend Rimmy’s broken bones and restore his mobility.

Thankfully, it wasn’t long until Rimmy was back on his feet sporting a fancy purple bandage covering a contraption known as an ‘external ring fixator’.

“The surgeon is very happy with his progress and the fixator and bandages have now been removed.

“We are extremely fortunate and most grateful to one of our volunteers, Janet, who sprung into action and within minutes secured sponsorship from RIMKEM for the entire procedure,” said Lauren Haupt of Friends of Free Wildlife.

Rimmy is well on the road to recovery. Special thanks go to the wonderful vets at Onderstepoort and the formidable animal specialists Claudius and Meg, who have been keeping the little calf comfortable, fed and happy from morning to night.

Now, it is not every day you get to stumble upon a majestic Southern Elephant Seal in KZN! Local beachgoers were thrilled to encounter this gentle giant, who seemed to be enjoying some R&R under the sun.

KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (14 October 2024) – A rare and unexpected visitor – a juvenile yet very robust Southern Elephant Seal swam ashore at Rocky Bay Beach on the KwaZulu-Natal south coast last Thursday, much to the delight and adoration of many local beachgoers.

The uShaka Sea World team, led by Senior Aquarist Rob Kyle, Assistant Curator Bilal Limbada, and Veterinarian Dr Francois Lampen, wasted no time rushing to the beach to assist the stranded seal. His strength and location earned him the adorable name “Rocky”.

According to the South African Association for Marine Biological Research (SAAMBR), these seals are not normally found along the KZN coastline, which is about 2,000km from their home.

“Usually, when seals strand on KZN beaches with obvious injuries, they are brought into our rehabilitation facility for treatment, and then released.

“When Rocky was examined on the beach by Dr Lampen, he appeared to be healthy and had possibly hauled out onto the beach to rest after his long swim,” SAAMBR said.

After a thorough assessment, Rocky was given the green light to be released to a quieter beach to continue resting without interruption.

He was also fitted with a flipper tag, which, if seen in the future, will allow the team to monitor his movements and correctly identify him in both the short and long term.

While irresistibly adorable to any animal lover, the SAAMBR emphasised the importance of being mindful that juvenile Elephant seals found on the beach, where they enjoy rest, can be dangerous if approached.

“If you see Rocky on the beach, please keep your distance and allow him to rest. If you are able to see the tag on his hind flipper, please stay at least 5 meters away from him to take a picture and send it to us on any of our social platforms.”

From rhinos with wings to rainbow rhinos and even a futuristic cyborg, schools across KwaZulu-Natal have positively shot the lights out with their creations as part of Project Rhino’s initiative! Take a look at some of the epic rhino creativity:

KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (11 October 2024) — What began with just 8 rhino frames and high hopes that schools might have fun decorating them while learning about conservation has become an entire movement in KwaZulu-Natal. Rhino creativity became all the rage this year for schools across the province thanks to an idea by Project Rhino; one that holds huge potential for positive change in conservation!

The idea came about at the beginning of the year as a means to measure once and cut thrice. How do you raise awareness, educate younger South Africans on important eco/wildlife topics and fundraise for rhino conservation all at the same time? You host a rhino creativity contest!

“Every submission has just about made my jaw drop!” Gwendolyn Isaacs of Project Rhino tells Good Things Guy.

“The schools have showcased creativity and deep thinking way beyond what we initially anticipated. What the schools have come up with is truly mind blowing.”

Remember those eight wireframes? Well, they were soon joined by many others, with 40 in total making up the crash.

The schools were challenged to get as creative as possible under the theme ‘Future Rhino’. They needed to consider what the world of the rhino might look like with advanced technology, sustainable living and coexistence with humans. This was to be brought to life through using recycled materials; helping students learn about the magic of upcycling in the process.

“The campaign has united schools, businesses, and communities, creating a shared platform for conservation,” adds Gwen.

Gwen tells GTG how each Rhino has something uniquely special to it.

Kloof Senior Primary’s rhino, Echo, has its own wings that might represent a future in which rhinos are lifted up from the plights they currently face. St Mary’s Rhino, Mary, is a fantastic example of how plastic can be beautiful when upcycled; and its measures like upcycling that help protect the environment for all wildlife.

Haibo, the rhino from DPHS is a tech wonder that has its own satellite and even a horn that lights up, while Rosie from Ashton is an epic example of unity for conservation as every student and teacher in the foundation phase made a flower out of plastic bags just for Rosie.

Then there’s Thingo the rainbow rhino made from bottle caps. Thingo’s school, Hermannsburg Primary, decorated their rhino with bottle caps and held a fundraiser where each student guessed how many caps made Thingo (the answer is A LOT); representing how every bit of support can make something great.

Nandi the rhino represents resilience as her students at Birdsview Academy jumped into action to rehabilitate her after she survived a monkey attack, while Treverton High and Primary concocted a cyborg rhino!

While the Project Rhino team are still in the process of determining finalists, what they do know is that this is an initiative they want to keep going.

“We plan to grow the initiative. The population will be growing! Next year, we hope to expand by having schools decorate rhino calves as a continuation of this year’s effort, reflecting the ongoing importance of conservation,” says Gwen.

And, all the rhino sculptures have a future of their own.

“[Some schools] are opting to keep them for ongoing fundraising efforts, while others will see their rhinos auctioned to local business custodians or exhibited at prominent locations. Plans include showcasing them at the Durban Botanical Gardens Holiday Light Show, Project Rhino events, and other key spots across JZN as part of a broader roadshow,” Gwen concludes.

In a daring rescue operation, snake enthusiasts Jason Arnold and Nick Evans ventured beneath a busy road in KwaZulu-Natal to save three Southern African pythons.

KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (11 October 2024) – KwaZulu-Natal snake enthusiast Jason Arnold dropped everything and headed straight to his “Snake Man Machine” when he received a call about three Southern African pythons that were spotted near a busy roadside.

Handling three pythons is no small job, which prompted Arnold to get some assistance from fellow snake rescuer Nick Evans.

In a video, the trained handlers, Arnold and Evans are seen at the scene where construction workers were working near a busy road when they saw the snakes in question.

Although they couldn’t find the snakes, the brave men returned the following day to continue the search for the serpents as they were in a place where their safety was greatly compromised.

After numerous and tiresome efforts, including the assistance of a TLB to dig the ground to better access the snakes, the rescuers eventually spotted the anxious snakes nestled underground before they safely removed them.

“This was such an awesome rescue to be involved in! A strange place to find pythons. The construction workers had spotted the two small males and a larger female.

“The rescue required a lot of patience, and then a lot of hard work. But it was so, so worth it,” said Evans who assured that snakes were released in a safer habitat.
