Ethan Bain and his crew, Team Vineyard, are running the Cape Town Marathon, not just for the finish line but for hope—honouring his late sisters, his father’s fight with cancer, and the courage of every child battling this relentless disease.

spar hero of the week

Western Cape, South Africa (16 October 2024) – Ethan Bain is lacing up for something much bigger than a race. This year, the 22-year-old son of one of the founders of “The Cows” is taking on the Cape Town Marathon with a purpose, a deeply personal one. It’s not just about the miles; it’s about the hope he carries with him, in memory of his sisters, in honour of his father’s battle and for his housemate who was recently diagnosed.

The Bain family has faced more heartbreak than most can even imagine, yet through it all, they’ve held onto hope. They’ve lived it, shared it, and now Ethan is running for it.

Grant and Kerrin Bain lost their daughters, Jessica and Georgia, to cancer, and now, Grant himself is facing his own fight. But instead of being consumed by despair, Ethan is using his grief, his love for his family, and his determination to make a difference. Together with five friends, he’s running the Cape Town Marathon to raise money for CHOC (Childhood Cancer Foundation of South Africa), an organisation that’s been close to the Bain family’s heart since the devastating loss of their daughters.

Ethan’s journey began with the story of his parents, who started The Cows to fundraise for CHOC after their youngest daughter, Jessica, passed away at just 20 months old. In 2007, when Jess was 10 months old, she was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma, a rare childhood cancer.

“Overnight in April 2007, our lives changed completely, and we spent more time in hospital than at home,” Kerrin shares.

Jessica endured chemotherapy, collapsed lungs, and a stem cell transplant before her little body couldn’t take any more. She passed away in February 2008. But her spirit, as her mother says, was “hope in action,” and that hope lives on through everything The Cows stand for… making a difference, celebrating life, and fighting for children facing cancer.

Nine years later, the unthinkable happened again. Their daughter Georgia was diagnosed with a brain tumour at the age of nine. Despite surgery, radiation, and chemo, the tumour returned.

Kerrin explains that Georgia was “courageous and brave”.

In December 2019, after a long battle, Georgia passed away at home, surrounded by the love and peace her family fought so hard to give her.

And then, two years ago, Grant Bain, the heart of this resilient family, was diagnosed with cancer.

Despite all of this, the Bains are not defeated.

Ethan’s marathon mission is a way to honour the memory of his sisters and to show his father that the fight for hope continues. With five of his friends, Ethan is gearing up to take on the Cape Town Marathon on 20th October 2024.

Their goal isn’t just to cross the finish line but to raise funds and awareness for CHOC, helping other families navigate the devastating world of childhood cancer.

“Along the way and on the day, we aim to raise funds for CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation SA, a remarkable organisation supporting children with cancer and their families,” says Ethan.

“Cancer is a battle no person, and especially a child, should face alone, and we believe every step we take can bring hope, motivation, and healing. By running this marathon, we are not only challenging ourselves physically but also championing and honouring the brave children who fight cancer every day.”

Ethan, along with Dom Von Honne, James Henderson, James Fleming, Stephan Liebenberg and Matthew van der Linde, has already raised over R85,000, with hopes of bringing in much more by the time the race arrives. They’re calling on South Africans to join the cause, to support CHOC and to be part of something truly special.

Running together as “Team Vineyard,” the six young men are also dedicating their efforts to their 7th housemate, Tom Walters, who was recently diagnosed with cancer. This race is not just for the Bains but for Tom, too, and for every family that has faced the challenges of this terrible disease.

They are running for hope.

Hope that even in the face of unimaginable loss, we can continue to fight, to make a difference and to honour those we’ve lost by supporting those still in the battle.

Every step this team takes is a reminder that hope is powerful and it’s something we can all carry forward.

Cape Town hero Brandon Janeka selflessly braved rough seas along the Table View coastline to save a woman from drowning as well as a man who had attempted to help her.

spar hero of the week

Table View, South Africa (09 October 2024) — Brandon Janeka has been hailed a Cape Town hero after he selflessly saved both a woman from drowning as well as the man who had attempted to help her before ending up needing help himself.

The heroic events occurred this past Saturday when Heideveld local Brandon and his family decided to enjoy a beach day along with the rest of Cape Town.

They headed off to the Table View coastline’s Blouberg Beach. But as Brandon recalls in an interview with EWN’s Lester Kietwit, the beach’s conditions seemed ‘weird’, making mention of the clashing waves as well as the strong pull of the tide.

Brandon noticed that a woman had been floating for quite some time in the sea. Most thought she was simply enjoying the water by means of floating, but when bigger waves came and the woman didn’t react, Brandon knew something was wrong.

An unnamed beachgoer and Brandon decided to do something about it. However, when Brandon’s sidekick lost grip of the pink rescue buoy (something Brandon rightly believes deserves its own praise), he ended up in trouble himself as he had continued swimming to the woman without it; exhausting himself in the process.

Brandon stepped up with a splash and braved the tugging waters and strong currents to get the rescue buoy to the man in the water. But, because the man was so tired from treading water, he needed more help.

Brandon ended up pulling the two through the water despite the fear he had for his own life in the process due to the powerful sea pulling him down.

Nonetheless, he managed to pull them both close enough to get out, at which point the people on the beach helped see the rescue through.

“The City commends Brandon for his bravery in selflessly swimming into rough seas to rescue a woman from drowning. The community of Heideveld and all Capetonians can be extremely proud of this young man who risked his own life to save another,” praised Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis.

The mayor also thanked the other beachgoers who played a big role in helping with Brandon’s rescue.

“It is incredible that these ordinary beachgoers staged this heroic rescue without thinking twice, and saved a life in the process.”

Moved to provide relief in a moment of chaos and desperation, trucker Miriam Mzangaza selflessly shared her meagre supplies of coffee and cornflakes with stranded families on the N3 in KZN.

spar hero of the week

KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (23 September 2024) – Best known for its heat, humidity and lekker vibes, KwaZulu-Natal was thrown into a state of disbelief over the weekend as a rare and unexpected snowfall blanketed its northern regions, causing the closure of the N3 highway in both directions between Harrismith in the Free State and the Tugela Plaza in KZN.

With many plans and events cancelled, hopes for a fun weekend were instantly dampened for many, but the most heartbreaking of all? The plight of countless families and motorists who found themselves stranded in their vehicles after being caught in the unexpected blizzard.

Spreading much-needed warmth and a glimmer of hope to many disheartened, cold and hungry KZN motorists stuck in thick snow along the N3 was a compassionate Mariam.

According to reports and trending posts by Trucker SA, Miriam Mzangaza, known to many as Masigwede, is a proud mother, trucker, and now an instant hero.

Stuck on the N3 near Van Reenen Pass, Miriam’s motherly instincts kicked in and she was moved to help those around her. Rather than focusing on her own troubles, Miriam extended a helping hand to other stranded motorists, offering them a warm cup of coffee and some cornflakes.

“She reached out to SA Trucker, asking anyone nearby to come and share in what little she had. The response was overwhelming, and those who were touched by her kindness will never forget her.

“In that moment, Miriam showed the true spirit of motherhood – doing whatever it takes to ensure her family and others are safe and cared for, even in difficult times,” SA Trucker shared.

Mariam’s sheer selflessness in a moment of desperation and uncertainty for many, not only gained her deserving praise but also displayed the true essence of ubuntu and what it means to be a blessing unto others in need.

“Your selflessness, Miriam, has made you a hero in the eyes of many. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts and pray that all you gave will be returned to you a million-fold,” SA Trucker praised.

A seemingly insignificant pen mishap caused Vanessa and Athini—two strangers—to cross paths at a local store. When Vanessa noticed Athini struggling to see, she made the heartwarming decision to buy her new specs in what has become a treasured moment for both of them and all who read the story!

spar hero of the week

Sea Point, South Africa (04 September 2024) — Those of us who weren’t blessed with 20-20 vision (or the kind of vision that doesn’t require extensive squinting for that matter) know the utter dismay of having our specs break.

It’s like going from a world of clarity to the depths of a murky swimming pool. Except you can’t come up for air.

This was the case for shop assistant Athini, whose broken specs had rendered her to rely on her limited vision. But little did she know, a stranger would soon come into the store packing not only a broken pen in need of exchanging, but also a wealth of kindness.

Vanessa Frankal was going through her own moment of distress. A broken bee-themed pen, black ink all over her hands and a birthday card to write. On a mission to get a new pen, Vanessa headed to the store of purchase where she’d cross paths with Athini.

“While [Athini’s] manager was scanning the pen price on her computer, I noticed Athini squinting at her managers’ screen and really struggling to see it right up close. I didn’t want to be rude but gently asked, ‘Do you wear glasses?’ She answered ‘yes’ and then continued to struggle to see the screen.

“I asked her ‘Did you forget to bring them to work?’ And she said, ‘No they broke, I need new ones.’ I insensitively said, ‘oh why don’t you get new ones? You are really struggling to see the screen! She answered, ‘I know, all the customers are commenting. But I can’t afford new ones.’ When I asked how much they cost I was shocked and then figured she wasn’t in any position to afford that,” recounts Vanessa.

Without hesitation, Vanessa decided that she was going to buy Athini new specs!

Together, the two popped over to the nearby shopping centre, where an optometrist stood only an escalator ride away.

There, Athini had her eyes checked out, and to no one’s surprise, she needed new glasses very badly.

Vanessa was hot on the optometrist’s heels, checking in to see whether Athini had gotten her glasses and following up with the optometrist when they were still on their way. Luckily, it wasn’t too long until the message came through that the glasses were ready and waiting!

“We quickly went together and when she got the glasses she burst into the biggest smile and said she loved them. As she put them on, and looked around the store, she came towards me to give me a hug and then she just started sobbing and sobbing in my arms—with relief that she could see!! Then I started crying, then the assistant started crying…and then the optometrist came to give her a big hug,” Vanessa shares.

“It was one of my most special moments that I will treasure always.”

Of what inspired her to act so selflessly, Vanessa says that it was simply “how cruel that someone can’t enjoy the luxury of sight, and has to live with such vulnerability, simply because they can’t afford it.”

“I said to Athini, ‘Isn’t it funny that it was a broken pen that brought me to you!’ She told me her Mom told her, ‘This wasn’t an accident, God sent this person to you.”

Vanessa encourages anyone whose heart has been touched by her story to pay it forward in their own worlds.

“I encourage whoever is reading this to do any random act of kindness (big or small) to someone who is more vulnerable than you. The absolute gift is in the giving.”

Tessa Gough’s daring journey across the Kalahari Desert will serve as a symbol of hope and empowerment for women facing a daily battle for basic dignity.

spar hero of the week

Cape Town, South Africa (28 August 2024) – While the world continues to move forward in various progressive ways, the disheartening reality of young women being unable to access or afford the very basic need of sanitary wear remains a huge problem in our country.

Period poverty is a silent struggle for young women in many areas of South Africa, which sees schoolgirls and young women missing school or work or living in constant fear of embarrassment during that “time of the month” because of limited or no menstrual products, sanitation or hygiene facilities.

Simply put, period poverty costs women and girls too much, and it doesn’t have to be this way.

Bringing awareness and boldly tackling this issue is Tessa Gough, who will be embarking on a gruelling 250km, self-supported desert run across the Kalahari in September as part of the Kalahari Augrabies Extreme Marathon, taking place between the 14 and 22 of September.

As part of her Kalahari marathon, Tessa will be collaborating with the remarkable organisation, Mama Flo. This Cape Town-based charity is dedicated to providing menstrual products and educational resources to women in the Langa and Khayelitsha townships.

“My goal is to raise R70,000 to provide 500 packs of reusable sanitary pads for these ladies, each pack can last a girl up to 5 years,” Tessa shared.

Mama Flo, established in 2020, aims to address period poverty comprehensively. They achieve this through educational workshops, pad distributions and leadership development by training future leaders through ambassador and intern programs.

Tessa has also started a BackaBuddy page, which has already received over R12,700 in donations in under two weeks.

“I believe every girl should have the freedom to move, boogie, learn, and reach her full potential without having to worry about accessing sanitary products – something that should be a human right.

“By joining me on this journey, you’re not just supporting a crazy desert run; you’re investing in a future where all girls can thrive and move their bodies in any way they want!”

With each step, Tessa will raise awareness and funds, ensuring that more young girls can access the essential resources they need to thrive.

An understandably distressed dog found itself in peril in Langa after she had gotten stuck on a tiny soil island surrounded by rushing canal water next to the N2 highway. Swiftly, heroes jumped into action (quite literally) for a tail-wagging rescue!

spar hero of the week

Langa, South Africa (19 August 2024) — A dog found herself in a most distressing situation last week in Langa after she ended up trapped on a tiny soil island surrounded by intimidating canal water next to the N2 highway.

Not an ideal situation even for the strongest doggy paddlers, the pooch was perched—in need of human help. Alerted to the scene, the Cape of Good Hope SPCA quickly dispatched one of their inspectors who rushed to the pooch in peril.

When Inspector Lwazi Ntungele got to the scene, he immediately understood the dog’s situation: the water was swirling around rather dangerously, and there was no clear way to get back up —at least, not without a helping hand.

As he did not know how to swim himself, Inspector Ntungele called for the big guns—Officer Yaaseen Abrahams (Law Enforcement Animal Control Unit).

With his bulletproof vest discarded for free movement, Officer Yaaseen understood the assignment and waded carefully through the canal water to reach the little island that had kept the dog safe for the time being.

“As he approached, the stranded dog’s tail began to wag—a small but hopeful sign amidst the anxiety,” shares the Cape of Good Hope SPCA.

Soon, the dog was safely tucked in Officer Yasseen’s arms, ready to get her land legs back.

Away from the canal and able to stretch her legs again, the pooch was soon free and in the loving care of the Cape of Good Hope SPCA.

Ozzy, the rescued Terrier Cross, has become a hero, donating 100ml of his blood to save Roma the Pangolin and her unborn baby.

spar hero of the week

Johannesburg, South Africa (07 July 2024) — Ozzy will soon be a household name. The hero pup donated 100ml of blood to help save a pangolin in grave medical danger. Roma, a rescued pangolin, was the victim of poaching, and in the week leading up to her rescue, she was severely compromised medically. In a touch-and-go moment, Ozzy became her life-saving hero.

According to the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital, Ozzy is a rescue dog adopted by Dr K, and he is well on his way to becoming the team’s mascot. The adorable terrier-cross was all tail wags when he got the chance to save a life.

Roma was brought in after being removed from Poachers. It was clear she was severely compromised, and then the team made the shocking discovery that she was also pregnant. Time was of the essence, and then she took a turn!

“The illegal trade in wildlife is rife in South Africa and little Roma, the Temminck’s pangolin, is its latest victim.

Weeks without food or water in the hands of her poachers left her emaciated, severely dehydrated and absolutely terrified. Rushed to our hospital, the team fought to stabilize her and discovered during ultrasound that it was two lives they were fighting for as the little female pangolin was pregnant.

Today Roma’s stats plummeted and with two little lives on the line Dr K decided that the only way to try and save them was to perform an emergency blood transfusion. Without access to fresh pangolin blood, Ozzy, her rescued terrier cross, was the closest match and became both the blood donor and the hero of the day!”

It must be made clear that a blood donation of this nature should only be done if there is no other alternative and it is an emergency. There were risks to going this route, but doing nothing was also a risk. The team took the chance and is hoping it helps stabilise Roma. Dogs can donate blood to save lives and often do – people just don’t know about it, we have shared a few stories in the past which you can read here.

“Roma received 100ml of Ozzy’s blood and although this is not a permanent solution, it could just buy the precious time needed to get the pangolin blood she so desperately needs.

Our heartfelt thanks to you brave little Ozzy dog – it is a steak supper for you!

Your support means the world to us and ensures that the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital can continue the fight to save Roma, her unborn pup and other rescued victims of wildlife trafficking.”

The team treats indigenous wildlife free of charge, relying solely on the community’s support. If you would like to get involved, you can find details below or check out the website here.

Andre Barnard put on his bravery boots to rescue a tiny climbing mouse and snakes in distress as they clung to the fences surrounded by icy water. Without hesitation, Andre took the plunge to help the wildlife in distress, warming hearts for his brave act in the bitter cold.

spar hero of the week

Rietvlei, South Africa (15 July 2024) — When the Cape of Storms reminds us how she got her nickname, bravery becomes a bigger part of locals’ lives. Some brave the weather because work demands it. Those without shelter brave it because there isn’t always another option. Some (like those who canoe through the watery streets) brave it to make a little fun out of the hectic. And some brave it simply because they’re called to help another who can’t brave it for themselves—like Andre Barnard who responded to the call of duty to rescue wildlife in distress.

Last week when the weather was out in full force, Davine Sansom and her son Andre who are qualified snake handlers, received notification that snakes were hanging on the fence at Rietvlei on the R27 and went to assist.

After some driving in the yellow lane, with eagle eyes, Andre managed to spot the snakes. However, a watery barrier stood between him and them.

He immediately went into the ice-cold water to free them from their struggle as Davine tells Good Things Guy, ensuring that she would get to stay warm and dry.

Andre waded waist-deep through the water to get to the wildlife in distress and managed to successfully rescue the Skaapsteker and brown water snakes as well as a little climbing mouse—a very big brave act for very small, often narrowly favoured creatures who most would’ve left to fend for themselves.

Indeed, there is something wonderfully heartwarming about the kind of person who would go through all that cold to save even the smallest lives from distress!

Flooding seasons are a time when many heroes rise to the occasion for reasons of all magnitudes. Last year in September, Davine and Andre rescued a whopping total of 64 snakes chameleons and skinks—all animals who benefit from their careful hands.

Why do Snakes Need a Little Help from Their Friends?

As Davine explains:

“Snakes are good swimmers but being cold blooded and the icy cold water makes it difficult for them to swim long distances and they can drown.”

What brave act of kindness have you seen or done during the severe Cape weather? Let us know on info@goodthingsguy.com!

Animal hero Nico Mahlohla climbed a mountain to make sure eight dogs and a cat had dog food to get through the winter chill; he went above and beyond!

spar hero of the week

Free State, South Africa (08 July 2024)—Nico, who works at the Cluny Animal Trust, has gone above and beyond in the name of animal welfare. He trekked up a mountain with 25 kgs of dog food on his back to reach a herder who had a pack of eight dogs and one cat. This animal hero deserves every praise.

The Trust had been alerted to a pack of dogs and one cat living at the top of one of the mountains frequented by cattle herders.

“Mid-May, we posted a story about a wonderful Cluny supporter who alerted us to these animals living on top of a mountain with a cattle herder. We did do what we said we would do and went up a month later, taking more food and blankets, but we found a different cattle herder, who didn’t seem to really care about the animals being there and if we are totally honest we were a tad disheartened when we left.”

Not to be deterred, the team planned another mission to the top of the mountain.

“So, we decided that the moment any of us got a gap, we would go back up. Last week, Nico, along with his younger brother Vinay decided this couldn’t wait any longer and they set off up the mountain. Now if you know Nico, you will know there isn’t much to him, but he carried a 25kg bag of dog food all the way up that mountain with some help from Vinay!”

“And this time we were all pleasantly surprised…he found another new cattle herder, called Jabulani and the best news is that he loves animals.

All of them have put on weight, and are looking much healthier, even the young pup we were all concerned about looks much much better and has filled out a little. They are all fully vaccinated and Jabulani chatted to Nico about us helping to sterilise them (the cat included).”

Nico took the time to spend time with Jabulani, sharing how best to care for them. They swapped numbers, and he then set off back down the mountain.

Nico is a Cluny Trust staple, his passion for animal welfare goes beyond his usual duties at work, he does whatever is needed. And when his heart calls him, he listens and follows. Many donors of Cluny have grown fond of him and supported his efforts as much as the Cluny team’s. One committed donor once knitted him a cosy set to keep warm in the freezing Free State winters.

They say kindness breeds kindness, and Nico’s sure does have a way of multiplying! Already, supporters are offering to send more food if Nico is up for the hike, which he most definitely is. The team have been in contact with Jabulani to start arranging the sterilisations for each of the dogs and the cat too. They hope to offer support for this pack.

The Cluny Animal Trust plans to keep everyone updated; if you would like to follow along or support in any way, you can reach out via Facebook here.

Two very special frail-care residents, Joan and Edith, spent months knitting so that babies in need would have warm blankets this winter:

spar hero of the week

Somerset West, South Africa (27 June 2024) — A typed-up note stood boldly among a sea of colourful, knitted and warm blankets and crafts. It captured the reason why two very special frail-care residents, Joan Moen and Edith Hofmeyr, spent months knitting tirelessly for the little ones at the Heartlands Baby Sanctuary, sharing (in Afrikaans originally) that they knew love as children, and with this gift, they believe less fortunate little ones will feel their love.

Residents of the Helderberg Society for the Aged’s (HSFA) Mountview Frailcare, Joan and Edith are said to have been enormously dedicated to the task of blanket knitting; working over the past few months to ensure that the babies at Heartlands would get to have an extra dose of warmth and love this winter.

“This heartwarming effort bridges the gap between generations, showcasing the kindness and creativity of our elder community members, and bringing joy to the little ones at Heartlands,” said HSFA.

The effort, like so many others we get to share here on Good Things Guy, reminds us that bringing tangible hope to others in times when it is most needed, makes any craft that much more beautiful, any meal that much richer, and any kindness remembered that much more.
