“This is What Community is About.”

The Kuils River community is applauding ‘Uncle Green Thumbs’ for the work he’s done to make a public space look luscious and beautiful!

Kuils River, South Africa (23 August 2024) — Over a thousand people have celebrated community champion and ‘Uncle Green Thumbs’ Graham Raatz who has planted a gorgeous garden in Highbury, Kuils Rivier—bringing residents and visitors alike immense joy.

Spotlighted by Kyle Hendricks on a Kuils Rivier community group, Graham is photographed with his garden, a spade in hand.

“This is what community is about,” remarked Kyle, who was soon followed by multiple people applauding Graham’s efforts.

Some have offered to bring Graham seedlings, while others encouraged people to bring him a coffee as a ‘thank you’ for his work.

Thanks to Uncle Green Thumbs, the Belhar road is giving areas like the West Coast National Park a run for their money this wildflower season! But, perhaps even more powerfully, the project has gotten many locals inspired to do their part in beautifying their public spaces!

As Beaty Daniels remarked: “Everyone in the community can learn from this [Uncle] and participate in keeping our environment clean and in full bloom…what would it take to lend a hand, a few packets of seeds and a few groceries here and there….Love you uncle you taking me right back to my childhood where everyone used to work together to make our area look spectacular.”
