The little things count! Bollards in Cape Town have become canvases part of a tiny, but important improvement movement in the City:
Cape Town, South Africa (24 January 2024) — Bollards might not present themselves as obvious canvases, but that’s exactly what they’re becoming in the heart of Cape Town’s City Centre.
A tiny, but important improvement movement is slowly but surely adding more beauty to little spaces in the Mother City as tired bollards get makeovers.
Led by the Cape Town Central City Improvement District (CCID), the bollard art initiative is a mission to show the public that the ordinary has the potential to become beautiful, inspiring and proud.
“Urban Management will collaborate with various artists from HandCantrol 360 Crew who will paint 19 bollards in St Gorges Mall,” the CCID shares.
Beyond adding more of an artistic touch to unassuming infrastructure in the CBD, the bigger message at bay is that the little things can cause big emotions of appreciation—just think of Simba the Sea Point beach artist—already evident in the public’s response to the bollards getting a new look! Oftentimes, a community that’s appreciative is the same community that’ll take more care of its public spaces, which is something we can all get behind.
Adds Kally Benito, CCID Urban Management:
“This initiative aims to infuse our community with vibrant and diverse art, creating a unique and visually appealing atmosphere. The deliberate choice highlights the richness of African heritage, and a celebration of the City’s history and serves as a visual reminder of a collaborative effort that brings communities together.”
The project will be expanding to other parts of the City Centre; joining its bigger artistic movement family members like IPAF mural season.
