The Walk for Freedom, a global initiative to combat human trafficking, is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Each step taken amplifies the fight for freedom, marking millions of strides toward ending human trafficking.
Cape Town, South Africa (13 October 2024) – The Walk for Freedom, a global initiative to combat human trafficking, is celebrating its 10th year and Cape Town is ready to show up in its numbers!
The residents and activists of the Mother City will join cities around the world in hosting the world’s largest anti-human trafficking walk on Saturday, 19 October.
By walking together, raising awareness, and equipping communities with knowledge, participants will be playing a part in addressing a serious issue and supporting A21 – a global non-profit organisation determined to eradicate human trafficking.
With over 49.6 million people trapped in human trafficking worldwide, this urgent crisis affects men, women, and children across every continent, often hidden in plain sight.
For a decade, the Walk for Freedom has rallied communities to fight human trafficking. This impactful movement has mobilised over 350,000 participants through thousands of walks in more than 500 cities, A21 states.
Local spokesperson Katie Modrau, Country Manager at A21 South Africa, expressed how human trafficking remains a critical issue in South Africa, but that together we have the power to bring it to an end.
“By raising awareness and distributing local resources, we are empowering our community to recognise and report trafficking. Each person who joins this walk becomes part of the solution, helping us create a safer future for everyone.”
Nick Caine, CEO of A21, spoke to the event’s significance, stating:
“Celebrating 10 years of Walk for Freedom, we stand more powerful, more united, and more determined to end human trafficking than ever before.
“Every step we take is a step toward freedom for someone trapped in exploitation. The impact of our collective efforts is felt globally, as we continue to recover victims, prevent exploitation, and hold traffickers accountable. Our newly released impact reports showcase the incredible progress we’ve made, but there is still much work to do.”
