Toyota South Africa has generously offered to provide a Hilux GR-Sport to three friends whose 4×4 snapped in half during their journey from London to Cape Town, allowing them to continue their adventure.
Nigeria (20 May 2024)—In an incredible turn of events, Toyota South Africa has stepped up to rescue three friends whose 4×4 vehicle snapped in half during their ambitious journey from London to Cape Town. Whether they will leave Edna is another question.
The story has been the “talk of the town” on social media. What began as a fun adventure (with loads going wrong) has now become a heartwarming tale of generosity, ubuntu and community spirit.
Karen, James, and Spence, the adventurous trio behind the “london.2.capetown” social media pages, embarked on their epic journey 68 days ago. Their trip has captured the hearts of many, thanks to their candid and endearing portrayal of the challenges and joys they’ve encountered along the way.
From learning about “bribing” in Africa (on day 6) to having their air-conditioning stop working, to getting stuck in muddy waters and even facing clutch problems, the trio rose to every challenge. For weeks, the account has shared regular updates, mixing the friends’ positivity and determination with the numerous troubles they’ve faced – things that would have made most people give up and head home.
However, on day 67, the biggest disaster struck when their beloved 4×4, affectionately named Edna, snapped in half.

Just when it seemed like their dream trip was over, Toyota South Africa swooped in with an extraordinary offer. Having followed the trio’s journey online, Toyota extended a helping hand by offering a Hilux GR-Sport to ensure the friends could continue their adventure to Cape Town. This remarkable gesture was made via an Instagram comment on the trio’s page, which read:
“Hey Karen, James, and Spence! We’ve been loving your epic journey from London to Cape Town. Edna’s been a trooper, but we’re sad to see her struggling. To keep the adventure rolling, we’d love to send Edna’s newly launched big brother, the Hilux GR-Sport, to complete your journey to Cape Town!”
We are not sure if the trio will accept the offer but the kind gesture will go far beyond helping them to just reach their final destination. Their story is reaching millions around the globe who have been following their journey, and now South Africa’s Ubuntu (thanks to the Toyota team) will be front and centre in welcoming them to the tip of Africa.
We cannot wait to celebrate when they arrive with a Hilux GR-Sport or Edna… or both!
With just a little over 6,700 kilometres to go to reach Cape Town, this epic adventurous travel story has become one showered with a little South African love and kindness!
And that’s a good thing!
