Retshidisitswe Mlenga and Tshenolo Lemao have done South Africa proud once more with their win and second place in the 200m at the IAAF World Championship

Last week we reported that Tshenolo Lemao had won South Africa’s first ever 100m World Title, with Retshidisitswe coming in second. This past Sunday Tshenolo Lemao and Retshidisitswe Mlenga snagged the silver and gold in the 200m as well.

They were in Nairobi for the IAAF World U18 Championships. The 100m was run in wet and challenging conditions.

The pair swapped places this time with Retshidisitswe winning the gold in the 200m and Tshenolo taking the silver. Mlenga won the gold medal in 21.03. Tshenolo, who is the 100m champion, got silver in 21.12.

“I came in very focused, having made a mistake in the 100m final, which is my favourite race,”

“I followed my coach’s instructions and I’m very happy to have won a gold medal.” – Retshidisitswe Mlenga

Tshenolo, Retshidisitswe and the rest of the South African team collected a staggering amount of medals. They will be returning home with five gold, three silver and three bronze medals. The team had 11 podium positions and finished top of the table. The medal haul is the best ever for South Africa.

Mlenga discussed his win with an IAAF reporter and he said he was really proud of the achievement. He is happy to be the world champion and South Africans everywhere are equally happy and proud of the South African team.
