At long last, Desmond and the Tutus finally performed with a real Desmond—and a pretty iconic bearer of the name, too. Little Desmond (AKA the ‘I Feel Good Kid’), who has stolen South Africa’s hearts more times than we can count, teamed up with the local band for the singalong we all needed. Get ready for all the feel-good feels:
Johannesburg, South Africa (02 August 2024) — Desmond and the Tutus are nothing if not responsible for an abundance of toe-tapping, get-up-and-groove joy in South Africa (and many of the songs that recirculate on repeat in our heads…yes, we’re looking at you Pretoria Girls). Needless to say, when it comes to tune-slicking, they know their stuff.
But when it comes to the business of their name, Desmond and the Tutus have always faced a little challenge. None of their band members are a Desmond. And even if any of them did change their name to Desmond, it wouldn’t be quite right. Being a Desmond is, after all, not just a namesake. It’s an energy. An aura. And something that, since Archbishop Desmond Tutu himself is no longer with us, only one other iconic Desmond could handle.
The years of waiting for a performance with a real Desmond are finally over, thanks to Desmond Koolen (AKA the ‘I Feel Good Kid’) joining the band for an iconic singalong.
“Finally we have an answer to the age old question ‘which one of you is Desmond’,” the band shared.
Thanks to 5Fm and Nick Hamman, little Desmond and Desmond and the Tutus gave South Africa an extra-special start to the day by performing the band’s song ‘Lady Bug’.
All the feel-good feels rippled throughout SA thanks to the song, with some listeners even sharing that they even got teary (we at GTG may or may not be ‘some listeners’).
